Rich in history, archaeology and striking architecture, the Galle Dutch Fort—commonly referred to as Galle Fort—is why most tourists are drawn to Galle, so much so the historic site has become synonymous with the southwestern city. The seaside fortress dates all the way back to 1588, when the Portuguese were the first to build it, which the Dutch took over in the 17 century and extensively fortified, hence the moniker, "Galle Dutch Fort". Sitting within the confines of the heritage-rich Galle Fort is Sri Lanka's oldest light station, the magnificent Galle Fort Lighthouse—arguably the biggest draw of the old-world quarter. The onshore lighthouse was just an oil lamp back in 1650, which the British later 1848 constructed into the striking white, 30-metre tall lighthouse it is today. Besides the lighthouse's primary purpose of guiding the safe passage of ships into Galle Harbour, it also makes for a classic Sri Lanka seaside backdrop to countless Instagrammers of the island nation.
Nestled in the southernmost corner of Galle Fort is the tranquil Flag Rock, an erstwhile bastion that served as a signalling point in the days of yore, which now many tourists find as an incredible spot for lounging after exploring the fort and soaking up the charming scene—especially in the late-evenings when the tranquil and gorgeous sunset takes over the sky.
