Rich in history, archaeology and striking architecture, the Galle Dutch Fort—commonly referred to as Galle Fort—is why most tourists are drawn to Galle, so much so the historic site has become synonymous with the southwestern city. The seaside fortress dates all the way back to 1588, when the Portuguese were the first to build it, which the Dutch took over in the 17 century and extensively fortified, hence the moniker, "Galle Dutch Fort". Aside from the historic artefacts and architectural marvels, there's a whole host of shops, cafes and boutiques that add to an exciting experience.
