Top 10 Historic Sites to Visit in Bangkok - Ten Iconic Historical Attractions to Explore in the Thai Capital

Although most travellers head to Bangkok for its recreational highlights and shopping opportunities, culture buffs will find that the capital city is also home to several historical points of interest. Here are 10 of Bangkok's must-visit historic hotspots.

1

The Grand Palace

Ranked among Bangkok's most impressive cultural attractions, the Grand Palace in Bangkok was built by King Rama the First back in 1792. Serving as the palatial residence of the Thai royal family, this extensive compound on the banks of the Chao Phraya River is where the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaew is also found.

2

Wat Traimit

Home to one of the largest gold Buddha sculptures on the planet, Wat Traimit is another historic temple in the Thai capital. The mammoth sculpture, which is said to be worth USD 250 million, is believed to have been made during the 14th century or the Sukhothai era in Thai history. The mystical temple and its extensive gardens are a thriving religious epicentre to this day.

3

Wat Arun

Those who are based at the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok or any other Bangkok city hotel near the River of Kings must visit the Temple of Dawn. Wat Arun is not only one of the oldest places of worship in the city but also one of its most visually arresting sights.

4

Rattanakosin Island

Known as the area where historic Bangkok can be found, Rattanakosin Island is also found on the Chao Phraya River. Boasting iconic points of interest such as the National Museum and temples such as Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew, Rattanakosin Island is among the few "undeveloped" locations in Bangkok where ancient monuments take precedence over skyscrapers and malls.

5

Suan Pakkad Palace

Having served as the palace of the grandson of King Rama V, Prince Paribatra, Suan Pakkad Palace is a breathtaking compound full of antiques, paintings, and art. The prince's extensive collection of musical instruments, glassware and lacquer work is also on show at this traditional Thai home.

6

Jim Thompson House

Known as a pioneer in commercialising the silk industry in Thailand, Jim Thompson is a mysterious expat who established himself in Bangkok as a business mogul. Although Jim Thompson disappeared in 1967, his resplendent home and its gardens are now open to the public and remain the same as when Jim Thompson was occupying the residence.

7

Chinatown

Bangkok's own Chinatown is one of the oldest areas of the city and is lined with temples, thoroughfares and other highlights that date back hundreds of years. Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, the ancient shophouses, and the bustling markets are the main attractions in this part of the city.

8

M.R. Kukrit's House

Considered an architectural marvel, this museum dedicated to the life and times of M.R. Kukrit is another must-see hub for culture buffs.

9

Ayutthaya Historical Park

Located on the periphery of Downtown Bangkok, the Ayutthaya Historical Park refers to what remains of the former capital of Thailand, which was founded back in 1350.

10

Santa Cruz Church

Constructed in 1769, this charming Santa Cruz Church is found in an area of the city that was the heartland of Portuguese immigrants in Bangkok.
