5 most popular German beer styles to try – Enjoy the finest beer from Deutschland!

Beer was an important brew to Germany as it was regarded as safe, nutritious and caloric. Becoming popular after the enactment of the Beer Purity Law, there is a view that German beer is better than other types of beer due to these laws. Whichever is the case, find below famous German Beer styles.

1

Maibock/Traditional Bock

Look for that goat on the label and you have spotted the Bock. Bocks are a class of beers with the colour ranging from light (which is Maibock) to deep dark of Doppelbock and others. Amber to brown in colour Traditional Bock is strong, and a malty lager with the alcohol content within the ABV range of 6 to 7 per cent. Expect a bready, toasty and somewhat sweet flavour. The colour and flavour may vary due to seasonal variations of the malt used. Savour Maibock in a fine tulip glass along with your chosen nibble at your favourite pub in Dubai.

2

Pilsner/Helles

A popular brew, German Pilsner originated in Pilsner Urquell brewery in the Czech Republic however it was created by a Bavarian, Josef Groll. German Pilsner is a pale yellow lager brewed from malt of barley, that possesses a bitter snap of spicy, floral hops. It is easy to drink and almost all users endorse it as an extremely refreshing beer.

3

Altbier or Old Beer

This beer style is neither a lager nor an ale, it lies somewhere in between. This unusual brew is from Dusseldorf and its uniqueness is due to it being fermented cooler than most ales using a variety of yeast that thrives slightly above the temperature usually used for lagers. The outcome is a rich, nutty, bready malt taste alongside a spicy, floral hop bitterness. Most of the Altbiers are around 5 per cent ABV and the colour varies from copper tone to an amber tone. Stronger versions may exist which can be labelled as Sticke or Doppelstick altbier. A lot of visitors to Dubai enjoy Altbier and more at pubs such as Ernst Biergarten.

4

Kolsch

This unique beer enjoys the privilege of carrying its name of Kolsch, only if it is brewed within the city of Cologne in Germany and nowhere else in the world and is brewed observing the German purity Law of 1516. It is special due to the unusual fermentation process adopted. Fermented slightly warmer than altbier, yet cooler than other ales, the yeast yields a mild fruity flavour. Pair this up with a more pungent hop profile using spicy, herbal German hops and a mellow pale malt presence makes it a pleasant and easy drink with 5 per cent ABV.

5

Rauchbier

Brewed as a speciality beer in the Franconian town of Bamberg in Germany Rauchbier is made with a big portion of malt that is smoked over the flames of a beechwood fuelled fire, thus smoky and meaty flavour. This unusually savoury beer requires one to cultivate a taste for the same. Later innovations with drum kiln which helped the malt to be dried without exposure to an open flame were adopted by different breweries. However, in Bamberg, two breweries still use the olden day open flames to dry the malt thus carrying the same savoury beer.
