Visiting Sri Lanka? Here are 6 of the best places you need to check out!

Sri Lanka, also known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a country that is truly unmatched in beauty, culture, cuisine and tradition. Here are some of the best places to visit when you’re in paradise!

1

Lush greenery and sweater weather

Although Sri Lanka is a tropical country, there are highland parts of the island gifted with cooler temperatures. Nuwara Eliya is one of the more popular locations in central Sri Lanka to pay a visit to, if you’re craving cold weather and an accompanying mug of warm, freshly made Ceylon tea. Boasting many stunning botanical parks, golf courses and clubs, walkways and activities to indulge in, Nuwara Eliya won’t disappoint. You must take some time to visit a tea factory and witness the entire process of tea making while you’re there, as this is a fascinating insight into the huge tea industry of Sri Lanka.

2

Culture, and more culture

The cultural capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy, is as homely as it gets. Although a busy town during the day, the beauty of the central city is never lost. The picture-perfect Kandy lake sits at the centre of the town, surrounded by a walking path you must try! Home to the Temple of the Ancient Tooth Relic, the ancient city of Kandy is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While hints of modernization have made their way to this much-loved city, its old-world charm remains. Domestic flights in Sri Lanka, offered by companies such as Cinnamon Air, travel to and from Kandy regularly.

3

Ancient Ruins

For a historical deep dive, visit Polonnaruwa, ideal to witness the ancient ruins and history of Sri Lanka. While most of these prominent locations hold ruins, there are also well-preserved treasures lying in Polonnaruwa such as stupas, tombs, statues and temples.

4

Right on top of Sri Lanka

Adam’s Peak, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another one you ought to add to the list! Holding heavy religious and spiritual significance, this biodiversity hotspot is difficult to match. While the climb to the top can get daunting if you’re not much of a walker/climber, the views at the top are breathtaking. The best time to climb Adams Peak would be after midnight so that you reach the top right in time for the mesmerizing sunrise views.

5

Witness the wildlife

Your trip to Sri Lanka is incomplete without a safari adventure, and Yala National Park is ideal. Home to the highest density of leopards, coupled with magnificent nature in all its glory, Yala is perfect for those who like spotting animals in the wild!

6

Perfectly pristine beaches

As Sri Lanka is an island, it is no surprise that it’s blessed with stunning coconut-fringed, blindingly blue beaches. Arugambay has one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. This spot is also popular for surfers during the season, and also offers activities such as diving, speed boating and much more!
