Kandy is one of the most important cities you should visit when you explore Sri Lanka, and it is known as the hill capital of the island. There are historically important locations as well as religious locations in Kandy that are popular tourist attractions.

Temple of the Tooth Relic

Sri Dalada Maligawa, which is what the Temple of the Tooth Relic is commonly known across Sri Lanka, is a must-visit location when you are in Kandy. This beautiful structure, which is located in the centre of the city, is not only about the building but the scenery as well as the history. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is now home to the tooth relic of Lord Buddha and is a very important location for Buddhists from around the world. There is also an annual event that takes place in celebration of this tooth relic called the Esala Perahera, which takes place along the streets of Kandy.

Kandy is a compact city surrounded by hills from all sides and offers a stunning view to anyone who makes time to go to the viewpoint of the city. This is a location you should visit during daytime and nighttime so you can see the city in a different light each time. Apart from the street with the vehicles roaming about, you can also see the Dalada Maligawa, The Queens Hotel, Kandy Lake, and the Bahirawakanda Temple. You will also be able to indulge your taste byds in some street food if you visit the location in the evening or night as there are vendors who have small food stalls towards the latter part of the day. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens were created by the British during the colonial time as a tribute to the Queen, but the garden is now maintained by the Agriculture Department of the Peradeniya University, and it is a wonderful place to visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday life. Apart from the Orchid Garden, Rose Garden, and the garden for the indigenous plants, there are so many locations with greenery all around, and bridges covered in flowers and vines that make the area seem like it's right out of a fairy-tale.

If you are a tea lover, you should definitely make time to visit the National Tea Museum in Kandy as you will be able to learn about the history of how Sri Lanka started tea plantations. Visitors will also be able to learn about the process of making tea and the different types of tea. At the end of the tour, you will be able to sit down and enjoy a nice warm cup of tea, which completes the museum visit.

Bahirawakanda Temple

The Bahirawakanda Temple is an iconic temple in Sri Lanka as it has a huge and beautiful seated Buddha statue overlooking the city of Kandy. Most hotels and resorts in Kandy such as Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy are located not too far from the city so visiting the Bahirawakanda Temple is not a tedious task even if you have to make a special visit for it and you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the city when you get to the top.
