Top 10 tips to remember before visiting Horton Plains – Dive into the wilderness

Sri Lanka's Horton Plains National Park is undoubtedly one of the most stunning World Heritage Sites in the world. The park includes the region's two tallest mountains, Kirigalpotta and Totapola. The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka consist of a plateau-like structure with plains on one end.

1

Directions To Horton Plains

The majority of backpackers and visitors spend the night in Nuwara Eliya before departing early the following morning towards Horton Plains. Typically, cabs or tuk-tuks are employed for the approximately two-hour journey. It is recommended to visit the park in a group of at least four people, as the cost of the car can be split evenly.

Alternatively, if you are visiting from one of the hotels near Horton Plains such as the Araliya Green Hills then getting directions will be quite simple so be ready for an early start and a cold morning.

2

When to Visit Horton Plains National Park Most Effectively

The ideal time to visit the park is at the beginning of the year, particularly between January and March. The weather in Horton Plains National Park is generally overcast and misty, however, the beginning of the year has less precipitation, resulting in excellent views. You would also encounter fewer people. It is also recommended that you begin your travel to the park early and arrive at World's End by 9 a.m. to assure a decent view.

Animal Sighting

The national park is home to around 750 plant species and approximately 150 animal species. There are several types of orchids, ferns, and lichens in the region. The forest is home to a variety of creatures, including the Purple-Faced Langur, Wild Boa, Sri Lanka Superfowl, Magpie, Red Slender Loris, and Wood Pigeon. The birds and smaller animals, however, are easier to identify, so much so that the location is regarded as a paradise for bird lovers. Several indigenous species, such as the rhino horn lizard, Stripe-necked mongoose, and giant squirrels, are easily encountered on excursions across this park in Sri Lanka. There will also be a small number of deer that provide excellent photo opportunities. The leopard of Sri Lanka is another beautiful creature that few claim to have spotted here.

4

Go hiking

The highlight of this national park is the World's End, where the plateau of the park abruptly ends and drops more than 800 meters. On clear days, Adam's Peak is visible from World's End. In actuality, these mountains give way to plains that extend to the ocean, which is visible on the horizon around eighty kilometres away. Again, the morning is the optimum time to visit the World's End for clearer vistas. This point's natural beauty is absolutely outstanding.

5

Baker's Falls

In the midst of Horton Plains National Park, a branch of the river Belihuloya leads to these breath-taking falls. This frothy, hazy water formation, which is roughly 20 meters tall, is a good subject for photographs. The area is surrounded by abundant vegetation that fills the basin.
