Tangalle Attractions Worth Remembering - Explore the beauty of Tangalle!

The southern coast of Sri Lanka is renowned for its stunning beaches and fuss-free lifestyle. The fishing town of Tangalle has a few of the finest coastlines on the island and other interesting attractions as well.

1

The beaches

Tangalle has some of the most remote and gorgeous beaches in the south. Godellawella beach, also referred to as Silent beach, is among the most picturesque locations in the south. Located close to Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, the beach is seldom crowded and empty of the usual fanfare seen in areas like Mirissa and Unawatuna. There is a swing secured to a coconut tree to provide you with some fun and excitement! The beach is only 5 minutes away from Tangalle town by bus. Another wonderful beach is Goyambokka Beach, which can be reached within 15 minutes via bus.

2

Tangalle Beach and the natural pools

The Tangalle beach begins from the fishing station and extends for miles northward towards multiple fishing villages. Some places might not be the best for swimming due to the jagged protective rocks! At Medilla and Marakolliya, there are a few sections with a sandy coastline. In Medilla, the natural rock formations create rock pools with the incoming tide! Pallikkudawa is near a famous bird sanctuary and there is a small island to which one can walk from the coastline. These are great places to explore while holidaying at a Sri Lanka luxury villa.

3

Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary

The village Kalametiya is 20 minutes from Tangalle and is near Kumana bird sanctuary, which happens to be one of the oldest sanctuaries to have been founded in the country. Recognised as such in 1984, the natural reserve is woven near a mangrove lagoon, making it the perfect environment for bird watching. More than 150 types of birds live here, and about 54 migratory birds come here each year. The weaver bird is a famous resident here! You will discover the many hanging nests over trees, displaying their weaving mastery.

4

Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya

This old Buddhist temple situated on an elevated rock is encircled by four others named Kondagala, Bisogala, Seelawathigala and Benagala. Gala means ' rock' in Sinhalese. Due to its location, it is often called little Sigiriya. The temple has an older history than the Sigiriya, with numerous captivating statues, murals, and architecture illustrating unique Sri Lankan art forms.

5

Canoeing at Rekawa

The lagoon at Rekawa is separated from Tangalle Beach by a small coastal strip and stretches of inland water. It is an excellent site for canoeing/kayaking. Plenty of mangroves surround the lagoon, which is a thriving biodiversity of all kinds of flora and fauna.

Turtles at Rekawa

The Sri Lankan coastlines get visited regularly by all of the endangered turtles. Many conservation projects work tirelessly to safeguard these creatures from poachers and the illegal traders of eggs. At Rekawa, hawksbill, loggerhead, green turtle, olive ridley, and the rare leatherback visit the coastlines. The nesting season is from April to July. The volunteers can watch at a distance, and after the mother turtle finishes laying her eggs, those are collected and brought to hatcheries. Once hatched, the baby turtles are freed to the sea. The eggs get laid usually from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Visitors can become volunteers to experience this process first-hand.
