Also known as Sigiriya Rock, this is a fortress and a monument of historical value in Sri Lanka which is a short 20-minute ride from Habarana. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the eighth wonder of the world, this site was completed in the 5th century, named Lion Rock due to the massive Lion image carved from rock which was the entrance to the fortress. The remains of the palace can be witnessed atop the rock which still draws awe from visitors who marvel at the ancient architectural superiority, the frescoes adorning the rock surface and the breathtaking views from the top of the rock.
Less than a 30-minute drive from Habarana gets you to this Cave Temple Complex which is worth exploring. Initially, the living and meditation abodes of monks who frequented the forests, these group of natural caves have been transformed over the years making them one of the largest and superior Buddhist complexes in South and South-East Asian Regions. The massive internal spaces of the caves carry Buddhist murals, statues of different sizes and many artefacts whilst progression through the caves by visitors has been creatively managed to be systematic.
