What to Pack for Your Trip to Abu Dhabi – The Essentials!

Deciding what to pack for Middle Eastern Countries is a bit of a challenge. The strict religious rules in place mean modesty in dress at all costs. However, the soaring temperatures will also get to you if you don't pack the right stuff!

1

Best time to visit

Decide on the time you wish to visit, as this greatly influences how you pack your clothes and other stuff. Of course, no one expects a desert climate to be anything but hot, but don't underestimate it! During the summer, between July and August, the temperature skyrockets to around 106F. The best time to travel is during the winter months, from December to February. The temperature drops to 60F; however, the accommodation and flights will be on the expensive side. The shoulder months from May to September are also manageable. This is when hotels and flights tend to offer discounts as well.

Dress code in Abu Dhabi

Regarding the dress code in Abu Dhabi, it is good to know what the locals wear and, as a tourist what is expected of you. Also, know that the dressing style of locals will vary according to the person. There are places in the city, like hotels and tourist hot spots, where it's more liberal in terms of how you can dress. Most local women in Abu Dhabi dress in an abaya, which is a long flowing dress that covers the wrists and ankles. The headpiece worn is called the hijab, which covers the hair, ears, and neck. Some women will also wear the burqa, which covers up the whole body from head to toe, leaving only the eyes open. It is less common now, especially among the younger generations.

What should tourists wear?

Women visiting Abu Dhabi as tourists are not expected to stick to traditional garments. However, foreigners should exercise modesty over what they wear. It is best if both men and women keep both their arms and knees covered.

What to pack

When it comes to clothes, it will depend on which season you intend to travel. The summer months are long hot days and nights. With little to no humidity, the air is dry. So, it is important to pack clothes to keep you comfortable as possible. Loose long cotton dresses, skirts, kaftans, and any non-tight baggy clothing will be optimal, to combat the heat and respect religious norms. Make sure they are of a lighter shade as well; whites and pastel colours are great as they absorb less heat than darker hues. A scarf is also good when sightseeing in Abu Dhabi; for instance, when you visit mosques and other places of religious significance.

One-piece swimsuits are preferable while relaxing on the beach and in hotel pools. Bring along some coverups like a sarong or dress shirt to cover up once out of the water. A sweater will also be useful; this is because indoor air conditioning is typically on full blast to combat the heat. When it comes to footwear, open-toed sandals or slippers will be great. However, bring along a pair of good shoes if you intend to go on desert safaris or treks.
