Top 5 magnificent mosques in Oman – Architectural beauty that’s brilliantly unmatched

In Oman, Mosques play a vital role in its predominantly Islamic culture and tradition. With numerous picture-perfect mosques dotted all over the Sultanate, here are five you need to see for yourself.

1

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

A quick 25-minute drive from Avani Muscat Hotel, you'll come across the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which needs no introduction. Named after its leader, Sultan Qaboos, this mosque took 7 years to build in 2001. Covering a whopping 416,000 square metres, this mosque is said to be able to hold almost 20,000 worshippers at any given time. There is no question about the mosque's prominence in Dubai, as its interior is as beautiful as the exterior. The floor of the mosque is covered entirely in a Persian rug and it boasts a 14-metre tall Swarovski crystal-donned chandelier. This grand mosque has to be first on your list, and for good reason as it can be reached easily from any Omani restaurant in Muscat.

2

Mazoon Mosque

The full name of this prominent mosque is Sayyida Mazoon Bint Ahmed Mosque and is named after the mother of Sultan Qaboos. Located in Mawalih, Muscat, this beautiful mosque was built in 2006 and boasts a very clean, minimal and basic look, yet manages to catch the eye of anyone passing by. The arches and classic Islamic accents make this mosque one to admire, with numerous calligraphy impressions, lamps and detailed inscribed doors inside the mosque adding plenty of character. This is undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind mosque.

3

Al Zulfa Mosque

Commonly referred to as the "Royal Guards of Oman Mosque", the Al Zulfa Mosque was founded back in 1992. Located in Al Seeb Muscat, this mosque is breathtaking, with its green and gold domes. Together with the 20 domes, the mosque is also known for its unique geometrical shapes, in the building and floors. Further complementing this magnificent mosque are the Islamic designs and details which further add to the unique architecture.

4

Al Khor Mosque

The most important fact about this mosque, which was first known as Masjid Al Shuhadaa, is that numerous members of the Royal Family pray within its walls. Al Khor Mosque has two blue domes, and the interior also contains a lot of blue, with the walls inscribed in golden scripts from the Holy Quran. This mosque is known all over Oman for its crystal chandelier and stunning designs. You will also notice the ceiling, which contains the 99 names of God, in each of the blue and white tiles.

5

Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque

Known also as the Bahwan Mosque, the mosque was built in 2014 in Bausher, Muscat. The mosque is said to be able to hold 2100 worshippers at any given time as it is 20,300 square meters.
