Sri Lanka, also formerly known as Ceylon, was part of the British Empire. The country’s culture and history were all influenced by the British during the time they were here. Tea culture, for example, was introduced by the English, and Sri Lanka’s parliamentary system too was a creation by the British. There are tokens of Sri Lanka’s colonial history. For example, Heritance Tea Factory, a unique set up of a tea factory hotel in Nuwara Eliya, is housed inside a colonial building.
