List of foods to try in Oman - Mouthwatering adventures await!

While you are out and about in Oman, you need to check out the traditional dishes in the cry. If you enjoy a blend of spices and flavour, Omani cuisine won't disappoint!

1

Shuwa

You have to try Shuwa when in Oman, as the succulent beef in this dish doesn't get any better. Usually served during celebratory times such as Eid and similar festivals, there is an entire traditional process in making this dish. A deep pit is dug in a village, and this pit is then used to slow roast marinated meat over several hours. The meat is also spiced with a mix of herbs and spices found in the region. The dish is then shared among a large group of people along with rice and sometimes freshly baked bread. Nowadays, you'll find Shuwa in many touristy restaurants which serve Oman dishes.

2

Qahwa

If you're an avid coffee drinker and need this beverage to get you going, you must taste Qahwa in Oman. Qahwa is much more than just coffee, it's a gesture as it is served each time you visit a house, space or shop in Oman. You're like to get the sweet aroma of cardamom-infused coffee before you see it. Qahwa is never served alone, it is always served with either dates or Halwa, on a large steel plate. In some instances, fruits are also served to have right after you finish your coffee.

3

Mashakek

For meat lovers, this is another dish you need to add to the list! These grilled skewers have made their way to Oman through locals of Swahili descent. Come evening, you'll notice them taking out barbeque grills and iceboxes full of meat in skewers, marinated with east African spices. The preparation of this dish has become quite a common sight in the recent past. You can consume mashakek with either a tangy or sweet & sour sauce!

4

Majboos

A popular rice dish which is said to have originated in Saudi Arabia, Majboos is extremely popular! Also known as Makboos or Kabsa, you'll notice this dish is pretty common in the Arab world. The dish consists of basmati rice, vegetables and meat, mixed with a combination of spices. Any Oman restaurant is likely to serve Majboos, and you may even find authentic versions of it at the in-house restaurants located at properties such as Anantara Al Jabar Al Akhdar Resort. This rice dish is accompanied by a green salad, yoghurt, tomato sauce or even bread.

5

Dates

Oman has several different types of dates to try! You'll spot plenty of palm trees in Dubai, and each of them produces juicy dates of different shapes, sizes and colours. Dates are also a part of wonderful Omani hospitality! Sometimes, sesame paste and ground coconuts are mixed with dried dates to make different types of Omani sweets. Dates are also a common ingredient used in many famous sweet dishes in Oman, as they are so freely found and available in the country!
