Nestled atop a 205 metres high natural rock amidst a tropical forest and surrounded by another four imposing rocks, Mulkirigala Rock temple makes you feel a world away. The ancient Buddhist temple has been designated as an archaeological site by UNESCO and offers a deeper cultural understanding of the Buddhist nation while allowing you to wallow in serenity. The good 533-step climb to the summit is sure to give you a workout that'd break more than a sweat, but you can guarantee yourself that the trek will be totally worth it.
Make your way to the west of Tangalle to head to the Tangalle Lookout Tower, the best vantage point in the city to admire its scenic seascape. Once on the premises, you'll be met with a wide and easy stairwell, a piece of cake compared to the Mulkirigala climb, at the other end of it is the majestic Tangalle Lookout Tower. Palm trees sway to the gentle breeze, rolling waves crash on the golden shore, and the azure skies and waters extend far into the horizon—the word unreal doesn't do justice to this magnificent sight.
As a city that put itself on the map thanks to its picture-postcard beaches, no Tangalle itinerary would be complete without at least one beach on it and the Tangalle Beach is certainly a cut above the rest. Unwind under palms, bask in the sun or partake in a water sport to get your fill of adrenaline. After a day of revelling in the glories of the scenic beach, make your way to one of the finest Tangalle restaurants in the vicinity, such as Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, to indulge in a mouth-watering meal, just as incredible as the town's pristine shores.
As the sun goes down and the darkness descends upon you, head to the sandy Rekawa Beach to see sea turtles in action. The protected stretch of beach opens for visitors from 8.30 pm up until 11.30 pm, letting you witness mother turtles sneak up onto the shore to lay their eggs and, if lucky, catch the sight of baby turtles hatching out as well.
Set out on a day trip out of town to Udawalawe National Park, one of the largest and most visited national parks in Sri Lanka. Hop on a safari jeep and explore the lush wilderness to spot your favourite wild animals.
