Construction Tyre Basics – Facts Everyone Should Know

Anyone driving heavy machinery should know a thing or two about the tyres the machines rest on. These include the type of rubber, the load they can bear, and more features that help with maintaining safety as well as getting the maximum mileage out of your machinery.

1

Check Off the Three Basics

Size is the first element to check when choosing construction machine tyres. The make and the size of your machinery will determine the dimensions of the tyre. It is imperative to ensure maximum safety and usage that the tyre fits the machinery perfectly. The type of tread pattern the tyre offers is important too because traction will depend on the tread pattern matching the surface you will be driving your machinery on. Smooth surfaces require softer traction while rough gravel type surfaces require durability and wear resistance from the tyre track pattern. If you are looking for the best in material handling tyres in Sri Lanka, choose to purchase your tyres from the biggest tyre manufacturers in the country. Some like GRI Tires are popular options.

2

Know to Read the Information on the Sidewall of the Tyre

The sidewall of the tyre holds all the necessary information you need for replacing the tyre. The basic spec details are included there together with brand, size, type and product name all listed for easy access.

3

What are PR and SR?

Ply rating or PR is a rating that is applied to bias-ply tyres. A bias-ply tyre has its plies aligned in a criss-cross manner so that they overlap. Star rating or SR applies to all radial tyres. These are tyres where the plies are set at a 90-degree angle following the direction the tyre rolls. Both SR and PR are used to determine the strength of the tyre through the way it is constructed, and how much horsepower it can sustain. So, if the PR or SR number is higher the more pressure the carcass (inner chamber of the tyre) can handle, and is a good indication for when you are looking for tyres that can handle a heavier load.

What is Different in Radial and Bias Tyres

The carcass determines the difference, as that is what reinforces the exterior rubber of the tyre. Radial offer stronger tread and longer usage is more heat resistant and offers a smoother ride. The bias tyre is less expensive and easier to sustain.

5

How Much Speed and Load Can Your Tyres Handle?

The load index or LI determines how much of a load your tyres can handle. It is a standard calculation that tells you about the load by speed, that the vehicle is capable of handling. You can find the speed under the speed symbol or SS, and sometimes your heavy vehicle tyre may display more than one-speed symbol meaning it can handle different loads at different speeds. Therefore, the LI and SS is a more accurate calculations of the load your tyres can carry over the measurement given by the PR.
