What is Your Type of Coffee? - How to Pick the Right Coffee Drink to Suit Your Preferences

Knowing what your type of coffee happens to be is a matter of identifying a beverage that suits your needs. Here's a rundown of the most popular coffee drinks served in cafes and how they are made so you can make an informed decision.

1

Identify Your Bean Preference

When ordering a cup of Joe at a cafe or placing a coffee bean order online, it is important to know what type of bean the coffee drink consists of. Whether it's vendors such as Damn Fine Coffee or any other, there are two basic types of coffee beans on sale all around the world - Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is, by far, the most popular variety of coffee beans in the world. Coffee lovers love the mild taste of this bean, which has a sweeter flavour and can be consumed straight without diluting it in other ingredients. Ironically though, Arabica beans do not have as much caffeine content as Robusta which is not only less expensive but stronger in flavour. Used in instant coffee mixes and powders, a cup that is infused with Robusta beans can really kick some energy into your body.

2

Flat White

As a coffee drink that was invented in Australia, you will find that most Aussies prefer a flat white over any other type of coffee even when they are travelling to coffee capitals of the world. A flat white is an espresso with steamed milk infused into it but minus the foam. Some cafes sprinkle chocolate shavings on top as this coffee is white and mild compared to stronger coffee beverages.

3

Cappuccino

Due to its potent caffeine flavour, one would be forgiven for thinking that a cup of cappuccino contains no milk at all. Steamed milk is a crucial ingredient of a cappuccino but there is more foam than actual milk. Some cafes add flavour shots to cappuccinos and also top off the foamy top layer of the coffee with cinnamon or cocoa powder.

4

Latte

Perhaps the most beloved and frequently ordered coffee variety on the planet, a latte is strictly for those of you who would rather have more milk in their coffee than a robust coffee flavour. Made using steamed milk and one shot of espresso, lattes are also often served with vanilla, pumpkin spice and other complementary flavours.

5

Americano

Often compared to plain black coffee, an Americano is made of up a single espresso shot mixed in hot water. It is crucial to pour the shot of espresso into the cup before the hot water.

6

Macchiato

This is another espresso-oriented coffee beverage with a little bit of foam on top. Most coffee connoisseurs consider this the happy middle between a doppio (double shot of espresso) and a cappuccino.

7

Black

As the simplest coffee beverage on any cafe menu, black coffee is basically ground-up coffee beans steeped in warm water. Although it is technically called cafe noir some like to have black coffee with sugar or cream.
