5 Great Places to Visit in Habarana—Rustic Wild and Exotic Animals

Habarana, Sri Lanka, is a nature lover's haven. The rustic surroundings that are home to scrub jungles and charming little villages are exotic havens, which are most popular among wild elephants and other wildlife. Here are the top five places to visit in Habarana.

1

Explore the Minneriya National Park

One of the main elephant corridors in Sri Lanka, the Minneriya National Park will treat you to sights of migrating elephant herds. August is the high season, and you can easily spot over 200 of the great mammals together with their young calves. The area is dominated by the gigantic Minneriya Lake, which is believed to be one of the most fertile grounds on the island. You can book a jeep safari into the park through your Habarana hotel, which makes the entire experience easy. Some like Cinnamon Lodge Habarana are a good reflection of the area's rustic surroundings and natural beauty.

2

Chill at Habarana Lake

The beautiful Habarana Lake is a favoured spot for elephants to bathe. So, take along the cameras for capturing some exotic photos. The lush foliage surrounding the area is lovely to explore and offers a soothing environment to feel at one with nature.

3

Check Out the Hurulu Forest Reserve

This park was named a biosphere reserve in 1977 and is not to be missed if you enjoy exploring lush jungles. A natural and protected habitat for elephants in Sri Lanka, the Hurulu Forest Reserve is an eco-centre that offers ethical jeep safaris to explore the lush interiors.

4

Visit Sigiriya

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as the Lions Rock Fortress, was built in the 5th century by the infamous King Kashyapa. The paranoid king, who feared reprisals from his brother, built his fortress up a gargantuan rock in the middle of the forest. The stronghold lacked nothing when it came to comforts and was the king's personal harem. You can visit the place today to witness the amazing feats of architecture that makes Sigiriya the treasure it is today. Well planned irrigation structures and lakes and gardens built at the summit of the rock are testaments to the ancient engineering feats of Sri Lanka's forefathers. The rock paintings and mirror wall are among cherished attractions inside the fort while the huge entrance flanked by two giant lions' paws is certainly impressive.

5

Pidurangala Rock

Located on the opposite end of Sigiriya, Pidurangala Rock is equally impressive. It was once a monastery maintained by King Kashyapa. And is even believed to be the place the king is buried after his death. You can visit the place to discover a range of ancient artefacts and for the stunning views of Sigiriya Rock across the lake. To get to the top of Pidurangala Rock, you must hike through the jungle. It is a lovely short hike that is no more than 30 minutes, but highly rewarding.
