Must-do’s in Nuwara Eliya – Sri Lanka’s top attractions

One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya, is located in the upper terrain. With a mild climate, misty hilltops, and verdant tea plantations, the town offers a memorable holiday.

1

Visit Victoria Park

If you’ve been travelling from Colombo for hours, you should visit Vitoria Park to relax and unwind. The tranquil surroundings and the perfectly manicured gardens offer a respite from the bustle of the city. Visit in the morning if you don’t want to be surrounded by crowds; in the evening, the park gets packed with locals.

2

Sample local tea at Pedro Tea Estate

Nuwara Eliya is the biggest tea producer in the country. The town is dotted with tea plantations, and one such tea plantation is Pedro Tea Estate. You can stroll among the thick growth of tea plants and enjoy a delicious cup of tea at the end of your visit. The plantation is a popular tourist attraction, so you can find several holiday bungalows in Nuwara Eliya within an hour’s distance.

3

Enjoy a boat ride

To enjoy an evening boat ride, visit Gregory Lake, 50 minutes from Scottish Planter. This is a popular family attraction in the town. Locals bring their kids here for picnics and to let them run around. You can also enjoy water sports like jet skiing here. A few vendors sell snacks, but it’s best to bring your own snacks and drinks. Even if you don’t want to do anything adventurous, Gregory Lake is the perfect spot to relax in the evening.

4

Panoramic views at Lovers Leap Waterfall

Located paces away from Pedro Tea Estate, Lovers Leap Waterfall is one of the best viewpoints in Sri Lanka. To get here, you’ll walk through the tea plantation past a small village. The journey isn’t exactly easy, but it’ll be filled with the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka’s upcountry. Once you get to the top of the waterfall, you can look over the beautiful Nuwara Eliya and its many attractions.

5

Visit Nuwara Eliya Post Office

There’s nothing more English than the town’s post office. The Tudor Manor house goes back to 1894. The house even graced a stamp in 1990. The place is located in the centre of the town, so you can easily find your way here.

6

Cycle

The mild climate and the unspoiled beauty of Nuwara Eliya can be enjoyed and experienced on a cycling tour. A bike rental is easy to find, but you can also speak to your hotel. Pack a picnic and explore the town at leisure on a bicycle. You can meet locals, explore the tea plantations, take pictures, and stop whenever you want to for a quick bite.

7

Visit Adma Agro Farm

To eat fresh strawberries, visit Adma Agro Farm. There’s no entrance fee, and you can eat strawberries off the plants for free. You should also visit the café for a glass of delicious strawberry juice.

8

Play golf

Enjoy a round of golf during your holiday in Nuwara Eliya. Nuwara Eliya Golf Course is a beautiful place where you can play golf and enjoy the tranquil nature of the upcountry. The golf course harks back to the colonial era of the country.

9

Visit St. Clair’s Falls

Another scenic attraction in Nuwara Eliya, St. Clair’s Falls, is a must-visit. Also called Little Niagara of Sri Lanka, the waterfall attracts hundreds of visitors. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, St. Clair’s Falls, cascade through green mountains and past tall trees. Getting here involves a hike through St. Clair Tea Estate, surrounded by mountains.

10

Visit Hakgala Botanical Gardens

Stretching over 28 acres, Hakgala Botanical Gardens is the highest altitude botanical garden in the world. Because of the mild climate of Nuwara Eliya, the garden nurtures some rare plant species that you won’t find anywhere else in the country. The garden is visited by around 100,000 people annually.
