Kalpitiya town sits in the northwestern province of Sri Lanka drawing kite surfers from all over the world to the famous Kalpitiya Lagoon. Stretching over 40 kilometres, this beautiful lagoon becomes a hive of activity during the high season from May to October. Kitesurfers from many a luxury boutique hotel in Sri Lanka converge here during this period as the steady southwest winds blow at an average speed of 17 to 25 knots suiting their extreme sport. Weligama meaning Sandy Village is a fishing settlement on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The long stretch of beach is ideal to soak in the sun and enjoy the beach as most visitors do. For surf lovers, Weligama offers a variety of breaks suited for all standards from beginners to more advanced riders. The season at Weligama runs from December to April. Catching the waves at dawn is wise as experienced by novices as the waves are quiet. Most visitors are attracted to Sandy Bay due to it being a steady and predictable coast.
