21st Century Skills for Middle Schoolers

This link is full of lesson plans that you can use to teach your middle schools the 8 skills needed for 21st century learners.

Information

There are 8 skills needed for 21st century learners. They are:

  1. Leadership
  2. Digital Literacy
  3. Communication
  4. Emotional Intelligence
  5. Entrepreneurship
  6. Global Citizenship
  7. Problem Solving
  8. Team-Working

This list provides some lesson plans for you to use with your middle school students. These are not all the lesson plans but use this as your starting point as you help your students develop into 21st century learners.

Important Note

While you are developing 21st century learners, not all of the lessons require high-tech materials to carry out the lessons.

Leadership
This lesson plan provides fun, hands - on, experiential learning opportunities that will help learners understand and use some important leadership skills.

Emotional Intelligence
This link provides a module of lessons on handling emotions during conflict. Students will be able to identify and control emotions in conflict. (Specifically lesson 2 and 3).

Entrepreneurship
This link provides a series of lessons on entrepreneurship. Students will discover what an entrepreneur is and what skills/resources are needed to be an entrepreneur. To access the associated presentation click here.

Global Citizenship

This file provides 8 lessons on understanding what it means to be a global citizenship, how to connect to the word and apply that knowledge. Since these resource was created in part by the University of Western Ontario, there is a focus on Canada. Teachers can either teach those Canada specific lessons as is, modify them or skip those lessons. There are still lessons provided that are not Canada specific.

Help your students to improve their problem solving skills with our free lesson plan, activities & exercises. You just need to sign up for an account, it is completely free. Students over the age of 14 can sign up as well. If they are younger or you would rather not have your students create accounts, all of the resources are available for printing. (They also have some other 21st century/job skill related lesson plans available.)
