List of child-friendly beaches in Sri Lanka – Seek the ideal sea and sand spots for children!

Beaches hold a great attraction for human beings. Being an island Sri Lanka is abundantly blessed with beaches most of which are ideal for a variety of water-based activities. If you are with children, knowledge of safe spots for relaxation and activities gives you peace of mind to enjoy the holiday.

1

The Golden Mile Beruwala

This beautiful beach with calm waters and a gentle slope is an ideal location to spend time with your children. They can build sandcastles, play ball or can even swim as a separate area has been netted for the safety of swimmers. An ideal place for a day out with your children away from your Negombo beach hotel. They will also be thrilled with the many good restaurants to fill them up.

2

The Mount Lavinia Beach

Having shallow waters in most parts, but having dips that may not be deep, it is best to venture out with your children when the locals are around and are in the waters swimming as they know the safe stretches of water well. A lifeguard tower is in operation till about 6 pm after which it is not manned, hence be vigilant. This scenic beach is enjoyed by the families touring the south from Heritance Negombo.

3

Dalawella Beach

About 2 km away from Galle, this is a lovely beach for families with children venturing to the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka. There is a natural barrier to the large surf along the length of the beach, which is the reef, thus creating a serene lagoon for children to play. Not being a highly popular beach is an advantage as crowds are less and more space and freedom for the children to frolic at Just keep an eye out that the children don't venture very close to the barrier.

4

Unawatuna Beach

A spectacular beach popular with both locals and visitors, Unawatuna is a wide curved bay, sloping down to the sea. With a cluster of beach bars, restaurants and even facilities for a bit of shopping for clothing and quick essential items, throngs of people are always about. The far western end of the beach tends to be quiet having a few smaller fishing boats pulled up when they are not at sea. Children would love to explore this end and enjoy the waters at this safe and beautiful bay, have an eye on them as they enjoy themselves.

5

Pasikudah Beach

A picturesque beach with sugary white sand and warm deep blue waters fanned by coconut and palmyrah palms keep enticing visitors to explore and enjoy the tropical waters. The gentle waves and the curve of Pasikudah bay make it ideal for swimming even for children. The semi-arid climate compels wearing a hat and sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun.

6

Mirissa Beach

A gently sloping beach which is quite popular with families. The centre of the beach generally is the best area for swimming. Once the swimming is done the whole family must savour the mouthwatering seafood Mirissa is famous for.
