Undoubtedly, if you are visiting a tropical island with kids, the top highlight is the location’s beaches. If your kids are ardent fans of the water, they will relish the calm, warm waters surrounding Zanzibar. Zanzibar’s beaches are protected by offshore reefs or broad coral lagoons, making it safe for snorkelling and swimming. Snorkelling is a popular activity to do with kids. Popular snorkelling spots include Mnemba Island, Chumbe Island, Nakupenda Beach and Blue Lagoon. You and your kids will be greeted with breathtaking sights underwater, including multi-hued corals, starfish, angelfish, eels and clownfish. Many resorts and hotels on the island, including The Residence Zanzibar, arrange snorkelling excursions to sandbanks. Some tours include lunch, and you will be provided with snorkelling gear.
Zanzibar’s beaches are ideal for relaxing seaside family fun. Famous kid-friendly beaches include Pongwe and Matemwe and Kiwengwa Beach on the east coast. Nungwi Beach in the north is also famous but can be crowded. The beach is also home to a lighthouse and an aquarium. Head to Kizimkazi to join a dolphin watching excursion or hop on board a dhow in Menai Bay for some thrilling dolphin watching rides. Another water-based attraction to explore is The Rock, a rocky mound in the ocean on the island’s southeast coast that serves as a floating restaurant. The restaurant can be accessed on foot during low tide or by boat.
Stone Town is dubbed the ‘old quarter’ of Zanzibar. No matter where your chosen Zanzibar beach resort is, visiting this quaint town is a must. This humble port is a melting pot of Omani, Portuguese, British, Indian and German influences and cultures, evident in its colonial architecture, streets, and buildings. Your kids will enjoy the cobbled streets and the plethora of markets selling intricate keepsakes, colourful textiles, aromatic spices, baskets, masks and carved animals made out of wood. Visit the spice market and enjoy refreshments at the town’s many quaint cafes and eateries. Be sure to stop by famous landmarks such as the House of Wonder, Zanzibar Fort, and Freddy Mercury's birthplace.
You cannot visit the island famed as a spice island without visiting a plantation replete with spices. Your kids will be mesmerised walking around acres of plantation filled with herbs of various types and uses. Some spices you can spot include lemongrass, cardamom, cloves, pepper, and ginger leaves. You can also see coffee plants and cacao beans. Some famous farms you should visit are Kizimbaniy Plantation, Jambo Spice Farm and Tatata Spice Farm. Many of the plantations are owned by local families, and you will also have the chance to purchase some spices to try back home. Make it enjoyable by asking your kids what spices they would like to try out.
What kid does not yearn to see some exciting wildlife while on holiday? In Zanzibar, you have a range of tropical wildlife to explore with your kids. If you visit between June and September, head to Mafia and, thereafter, to Juani Island for a beautiful display of turtle hatchlings. Alternatively, you can take your kids to see turtles at Mnarani Natural Aquarium in Nungwi. A must-do highlight in Zanzibar is a boat trip to Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island. On this island, your kids will be treated to sights of giant tortoises and will get the chance to stand next to them and pose for memorable photos. Changuu Island is located 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town.
Zanzibar is famed for its red colobus monkey, endemic to the island. About 6000 of these monkeys reside in the Jozani mangrove forest located in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. Be sure to visit the butterfly centre nearby, which features a stunning display of over 30 species of butterflies.
Since you are travelling with kids, it is vital to keep a few things in mind. Ensure you and your children receive the yellow fever vaccination before travelling and take malaria-related medication. Pack sufficient sunscreen and insect repellent. While in Zanzibar, be sure your kids wash their hands regularly and stick to bottled water.
