Ways to get around Luang Prabang – Check out many options for exploring this Ancient City!

This small city situated in Northern Laos lies in a valley of a mountainous region. Sitting on the peninsula formed by the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River, Luan Prabang is secluded by mountains and blessed with thriving greenery. Famed for its Buddhist Temples, a city to be explored and enjoyed.

1

Explore the city on foot

Luang Prabang being an ancient city has historical attractions some dating back to the 16th century such as the temple Wat Xieng Thong. Since most of these attractions are within an area of approximately three square kilometres, visiting them is best by foot as it will be a 10 to 20-minute walk from the city and many visitors do it. This is an ideal way to also experience the local vibes.

2

Do a memorable cruise

Being nestled in a peninsula makes a Luang Prabang cruise an enticing experience to visit Luang Prabang along the scenic shores of Southeast Asia. Ensconce yourself in a dreamy cabin and surrender to the flow of the Mekong River as you gaze at the beautiful vistas from your balcony. Going ashore to witness old traditions, explore temples and hidden caves and feel in awe by the elephants will be delightful breaks to admire and appreciate the verdant land you are visiting. Delectable cuisine aboard and evening dining are other pleasurable experiences to look forward to.

3

Cycle your way around

Motor traffic in Luang Prabang is not that heavy thus cycling your way around is enjoyable and no booking in advance is needed. Bike rental companies and even your hotel would provide bicycles for rent. Bicycles can be rented for around 3USD a day for an ordinary bike or slightly higher at 6USD for a sturdier mountain bike, a deposit will be taken. Your exploring will be a bit faster on the bike and if you are riding with others like visitors from Mekong Kingdoms do often, it will be an enjoyable excursion as you explore different parts of Luang Prabang.

4

The famous Tuk Tuks

There are no standard taxi companies in Luang Prabang, however, the Tuk Tuks do an admirable service around the city. With many Tuk Tuks being around, it is easy to hail one on the street or walk up those parked for hires. The rates are reasonable starting from around 2USD, it is prudent to agree on the fare before you commence the ride.

5

Do it on the Songthaew

This is the shared taxi service operating in Luang Prabang city for visits to the mountainous area or the interior countryside. This is the best option to use for such long distances by road, as it is too far for cycling or to do on Tuk Tuk. Songthaews can be boarded from the western end of the main street (Sisavangvong Road) and they resemble a mini lorry with the back turned into a passenger carriage with a step to climb in and two long seats on either side being used for seating.
