Best Places to Visit in Your Next Getaway – Explore the pearl of the Indian Ocean

Sri Lanka, commonly known as the paradise island located on the Indian Ocean, has a plethora of things to see and visit. Here are a few must-visit locations when you're in the country!

1

Galle Fort

Galle Fort, also known commonly as Dutch Fort, is a fort that was built in the south of Sri Lanka by the Portuguese. The construction of these fortifications started in the 16th century; however, in the 17th century, the fort underwent further modifications, which makes it quite a historic monument that illustrates European influence in Sri Lanka. Just a 1.5-hour drive away from Dickwella Resort & Spa or any of the other Dickwella resort, you must visit Galle Fort as it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, the fort has become a hub for shopping and restaurants, which makes visiting it a fun thing to do!

2

Sigiriya

If you want to dive a little more into the history of Sri Lanka and its kings, then the 1600-year-old Sigiriya Fortress, located within the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka, is a must! Built by King Kashyapa, this massive compound holds a tonne of interesting history. Although it's quite a walk to the top, you'll pass fascinating frescoes and paintings, which are thousands of years old. Today, only a few of these murals survive. The historical and archaeological significance remains to this day!

3

Yala National Park

Yala National Park is located in the South-Eastern part of Sri Lanka and is the prime national park of the island, boasting diversity like no other! In fact, the several habitats found within the park are wide-ranging; you'll see green plains, jungles, lakes, and even beaches. Yala National Park was opened in 1900 and spreads over 12,600 square kilometres. Apart from the majestic leopards, crocodiles, elephants and water buffaloes, there are also over 100 species of birds within the park. Make sure you take your binoculars and camera with you to capture some unique photographs!

4

World's End

World's End in Nuwara Eliya is another must-visit when you're in Sri Lanka, as it is one of the most impressive places to exist. As the name suggests, it's a steep cliff drop surrounded by looming mountains. Although you need to hike a bit to get there, it's quite an easy path that can be tackled by anyone, even young children. You will also get to see many animals, such as deer and leopards amidst the lush flora and fauna.

5

Sinharaja Forest Reserve
