List of most beautiful forests in Sri Lanka- Go into the heart of nature !

Though at one time Sri Lanka boasted a dense forest cover, at present, the forest cover stands at around 30 % Thus, most forested areas in the island are declared protected territory and are home to most of Sri Lanka's endemic wildlife.

1

Peak Wilderness Sanctuary

It is the third-largest protected forest reserve in Sri Lanka. The Peak Wilderness Sanctuary has a rainforest climate and earns its name from its location, which coves regions of Sri Pada/Adams Peak, Pidhurutalagala, Horton Plains and Hakgala. This expanse of forest is home to a rich biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna. For example, in 2009 the rarest toad in the world, the Adenomus kandianus, believed to be extinct was rediscovered within this region. The landscape includes cool mountainous climes and grassy plains in the Central Province to the more humid forest cover located in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

2

Knuckles

The Knuckles Mountain reserve includes areas of Kandy and Matale with the Mahaveli Valley dividing it from the Central Hills on the South and East, while the Matale ravine does the exact in the West. It was called Knuckles as the mountain peaks are similar to a clenched fist at a distance. Its significance is further emphasised as it is among the main supply of fresh water to the island. The Knuckles is one of the most stunning natural treasures of Sri Lanka. It is primarily because large sections of the forest remain closed off to the public, to prevent endangering the natural environment. The changing landscape of dry evergreen forests, along with grasslands, majestic mountain peaks are interwoven into rivulets and cascading waterfalls. Many species of animals live here. The spotted deer, purple-faced leaf monkeys, barking deer, along with many birds and amphibians. Popular hiking tracks are Mini world's end from Deanston; Dothalugala from Deanston; Nitro Caves from Corbett's Gap; and trail to Augallena cave through Thangappuwa from Corbett's Gap.

3

Sinharaja World Heritage

It is Sri Lanka's only remaining virgin rainforest and is home to thriving endemic biodiversity. The Sinharaja rainforest is designated as a World Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located within the Sabaragamuwa and Southern Province of Sri Lanka, the rainforest homes many species of animals as Sri Lankan leopard, purple-faced langur, red slender loris, and Sri Lankan elephant among others. Due to the dense vegetation, it is difficult to spot these animals. The forest is also a goldmine for endemic plants and herbs.

4

Ritigala Forest Reserve

Ritigala is a span of mountains, near Anuradhapura and is 42 km away from the city, belonging to the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Ritigala Nature Reserve is among the three most strict nature reserves in Sri Lanka.
Ritigala mountain ascends majestically at 2000 feet from the surrounding low terrain and is 500 feet above sea level. There are several peaks and the tallest is at the Ritigala summit and is 2514 feet. This forest reserve includes three kinds of forests, the base portion of the mountain is dry mixed Evergreen type, the centre is Tropical Montane Forest and towards the summit is the Upper Montane Forest type.
Historically known as Arittha Pabbatha (the mountain of Aritta). During the 3rd Century BCE, Aritta, King Devanampiyatissa's chief minister became the first Sri Lankan bhikkhu after the introduction of Buddhism to the land. He became an Arahat and lived his monastic life at Ritigala.
One can find monastic ruins dating to that period, with circular and terraced pathways, a stone bridge, and even a Monastery Complex.
To enter the Strict Nature Reserve, permission has to be obtained from the Forest Department. The Archeological Department, however, has permitted visitors to Ritigala to access 60 acres of this exquisite environment.
