Things to Do in Bentota – A savvy beach town!

Located on the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka, Bentota is a beach and resort town that has a lot to offer. If you're looking to spend some time outside of Colombo, here are a few things you can do in Bentota!

Bentota Beach

Visiting Bentota Beach goes without saying, as it is a town that is right beside the coast. If you enjoy lively and post-card perfect beaches, Bentota beach won't disappoint. The beach is an ideal place to relax away, get a suntan, dip in the blue waters or simply just stroll around and take in the breeze. The palm trees and pristine golden sands are simply the cherries on top! After your time at the beach, drop by at one of the many restaurants in Bentota, such as those at Avani Bentota.

Brief Gardens

A little out of Bentota, you'll come across Brief Garden by Bevis Bawa, brother of renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa. In fact, the Brief Garden inspired Geoffrey to create his own gardens, called Lunuganga. The space has been open to the public since the 1970s, and you'll feel as if you've stepped into a fantasy novel the moment you enter. The wonderful space boasts many interesting and unique factors within it, and within its 20 acres, you'll pass by hundreds of fascinating flora and fauna. The garden was designed by Bevis Bawa in the late 60s and was once owned by his family. You'll notice the Frangipani tree at the entrance, which is the very first tree planted by Bevis, and it's said he designed the house and garden around it.

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

If you're interested in seeing turtles and their conservation, you must visit the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project. The main aim of this project is to protect and rescue the sea turtles while ensuring the eggs hatch in a safe environment, away from the danger of predators. The place also takes care of sea turtles with disabilities. Both local and international visitors are welcome, as it is a learning experience and builds awareness.

Cinnamon Island

Another fascinating spot to add to your itinerary is the famous Cinnamon Island, which is famous for its cinnamon plantations. The island is located within Bentota and is famous not only for its spice heritage but also for the adrenaline pumping water sports offered by the island! When you're here, you can learn all about harvesting, peeling, oiling and the rolling cinnamon on the island, which is known to be run by just one family. The island sprawls with many cinnamon trees and you'll be fascinated to find out that the plantations date as far back as the 1900s!

If you're a lover of nature, then you must experience the Madu Ganga River Safari! This is a rich wildlife experience, where you'll get to see many different types of species of birds. Make sure you take your camera and binoculars with you, especially if you want to watch the birds in all their glory!
