Located on the stunning east coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is for beach lovers, thrill-seekers, history geeks and much more! Here are a few places you must visit when you're on the eastern side of the island.

Pigeon Island

No trip to Trincomalee is complete without a stop at pigeon island. This picture-perfect island is something that everyone talks about, as this is quite a famous snorkelling spot on the East Coast! You need to get on a boat to get to pigeon island, which takes around twenty minutes. The colourful fish, turtles and sharks make snorkelling at Pigeon Island truly a memorable experience! In fact, getting to witness the incredible sea life off the shores of Trincomalee is undoubtedly going to be the highlight of your trip!

Nilaveli Beach

What is a trip to Trincomalee without a stop at one of its most famous and picturesque beaches of all time? Nilaveli beach is for those who love swimming, going on boat rides or simply just getting a tan! This stretch of glistening beach is situated roughly 16 kilometres to the north of Trincomalee and getting there is quite easy! Not too far from many resorts in Trincomalee, the likes of Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, a quick tuk-tuk ride will take you to this stunning beach where you can spend all day!

Whale Watching

Do you want to catch the most majestic beast of the seas in all its glory? Trincomalee is the best spot to go whale watching, and the best season for this is from March until August. There are several whale watching tours you can opt for, each with varying prices so you can pick what suits you best! If you're lucky, alongside whales, you just may also get to see other marine animals such as dolphins. Do keep in mind that the whale watching tours start early in the morning, so you're going to have to set your alarms the night before if you don't want to miss it!

Koneswaram Temple

There's always time for a little bit of religious and cultural expedition. When you're in Trincomalee, make sure you stop by at Koneswaram temple – a Hindu temple that is extremely unique and intricate. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as the temple of 1000 pillars. Apart from indulging in religious lessons, you also get to witness the one-of-a-kind scenery from the temple! In fact, if you can get there early enough, it's worth catching the sunrise. The gorgeous bay views of the ocean are not to be missed so don't forget your camera!

Ford Frederick

To go back in time and learn a little about Sri Lanka's history, visit Ford Frederick, which was built in the 1600s. Although now utilised by the Sri Lankan military, the public is able to view it! There are plenty of deer roaming around this area, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.
