Beautiful Rice Terraces in Bali – Must–see landscapes

Bali is now becoming increasingly synonymous with beautiful and lush rice terraces that not only offer outstanding scenes to enjoy but also give insight to the local way of life. Here are the top five rice terraces to visit while there.

1

Jatiluwih

Flowing down sedately along the southern slopes of the Batukaru mountain range located in West Bali, the famous Jatiluwih rice terraces was once listed as one of the world's most important cultural landscapes. These rice fields in particular cover a whopping 600 hectares, are well-maintained and cared for by the local village. Jatiluwih is easily the largest most visually stunning of all rice terraces in Bali, and a visit is a must. Do note that one will be required to pay a small nominal fee to gain entrance to the main area. All funds go to the local village cooperative fund. Upon entering you will get to enjoy a truly impressive 180-degree view of the verdant sea of green below you.

2

Tegallalang

The village of Tegallang is one of the three villages in Ubud which are famous for their terrace landscapes. The main viewpoint at this charming and quaint village is cool and breezy and is a lovely spot to spend an afternoon. A bonus is that there are plenty of restaurants that serve mouthwatering local dishes, which can be enjoyed along with the spectacular views. One can also size the opportunity to purchase carvings, paintings and other handicraft items while here at the numerous kiosk and stalls located near the ledge, as this village in particular is famed for its craftwork and artisans.

3

Sidemen

Located along with the Besakih Temple and the Klungkung route, the Sidemen Village is approximately a two-hour drive from Ubud. This is another excellent spot to take in the stunning rice fields of East Bali. Upon visiting one will also get the opportunity to learn about the local organic produce. This village is also a great place to purchase colourful silk threads and hand-loomed cotton. Best luxury resorts in Bali including the likes of Nirjhara will be happy to arrange for a visit upon the request of guests.

4

Rendang

An attractive mountain village, Rendang comes under the regency of East Bali's Karangasem and offers some lovely countryside views which will further complement the drive through the Amlapura capital. The village is dominated by scenes of river and rice fields, while the residents make a living from both agricultural and stone carving activities. A testament to this is the numerous painstakingly carved stone temples and statues lining the roadways of the village. Additionally, this particular valley shares the location with Telaga Waja, Bali's favourite white-water rapids.

5

Pererenan

Pererenane is one of the fee farming villages located in the Canggu area that offers a scenic drive with emerald green expanses of rice fields on both sides. This village is also a favourite location to enjoy horse riding tours as well. Consider factoring a visit during a day trip to the Tanha Lot Temple located a mere 20 minutes north of the village.
