Walks and Hikes to Explore in Melbourne – Keep fit and explore mother nature

Melbourne is an exciting city with fantastic restaurants, shopping malls and galleries to explore. Yet nothing beats getting back to nature. Here are some great walks and trails to explore.

1

The Yarra Trail

Starting from Hoddle Bridge, Richmond, and ending at Dights Falls, Abbotsford, the Yarra Trail covers approximately 20 km of distance. While there are seemingly a million ways to approach the Yarra Trail, consider starting underneath the Swan Street Bridge. There are ample times for stops as well, as the Yarra trail covers some interesting spots including the Abbotsford Convent, the Collingwood Children's Farm, New York artist Ugo Rondinone's gigantic and colourful rainbow sculpture titled the, 'Our Magic Hour'.

2

Karoroit Creek Trail

Covering an easy distance of 16 km, the Kororoit Creek Trails starts from Fearom Reserve, Williamstown with the turnaround located at WG Cresser Reserve. The stretch is also ideal for dog walkers as there off-lead parks located at both ends, where you can let your furry friends gamble about to their heart's content. Apart from the parks, there is an inner urban oasis, which one can explore. Here the trail is paved and is littered with cafes and stalls to enjoy a cup of coffee or a healthy smoothie along the way.

3

Capital City Trail

A composite trail made up of sections from other trails, the Capital City Trail include the Inner Circle Rail Trail, Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, Yarra Trail, Merri Creek and Yarra Trail. The loop also covers iconic landmarks in Melbourne such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Melbourne Zoo and Southbank. If you are keen to explore a stretch that you might have not before, following the bikes across the Webb Bridge located near DFO South Walk and strolling along the Harbor Esplanade by the Docklands is highly recommended. The trail is also easily accessible from Collins Street hotels such as the likes of Oaks Melbourne on Collins Hotel as well.

4

Maribyrnong River Trail

If you are short on time and looking to get a brisk walk in then the Maribyrnong River trail will prove ideal. A very popular loop for the locals, this trail is located right next to the Maribyrnong River, and undulates along with the river's many snaps and bends. Do expect lots of dogs on this path. For your coffee fix consider stopping by The Boathouse to pick up a cuppa.

5

Blue Tongue Bend, Warrandyte State Park

While any point of the Yarra certainly has its merits, it's no secret that the higher you go, the cleaner and cooler the river is. Way up in northern Waeeadyte, nature lovers can take a casual stroll through narrow paths and thick bushland and inhale that sweet mountain air that you most definitely won't find in the city. Keep in mind that there are a few small inclines to be aware of on the trail, which however can be easily navigated by intermediate walkers. One can also consider taking a little dip in the fresh cool water if one feels inclined to. Do keep in mind that dogs are not allowed on this trail.
