6 Essential Things to do in Kandy Sri Lanka's Culture Capital – Try to see all there is to see

When people visit Sri Lanka, for the most part, they simply want to head towards the beaches and enjoy their idea of a tropical vacation. However, the reality is that Sri Lanka, particularly Kandy, has a range of things to do that will enrich your vacation.

1

Check out the Botanical Garden in Kandy

This is, without doubt, one of the best botanical gardens on the island. There is no place quite like it and the range of people pouring in from all across the island is also a good indication that it's beloved by people from all backgrounds.
This garden is also well known for having over 4000 different species of plants and trees that have been either recently planted or have been in the garden from the very beginning. This space is ideal for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle that is now prevalent in the Kandy city, and simply spend a few hours reconnecting with nature to ground themselves.
There are also places where you can spend some time resting and there are also cafes where you can grab a bite to eat as well.
If you are staying in a resort in Kandy such as the Hunas Falls, be sure to take time out of your day to spend a few hours at this stunning landmark.

2

Explore the streets of Kandy

One of the most underrated things that can be done when visiting Kandy is exploring the city itself. The city is now a bustling hub of business and tourism however it still retains much of the old school charm from the 1900s. There are many buildings that are older than they seem and plenty of little nooks and crannies where little stores and teashops have been quietly running their operations for decades.
In order to truly appreciate the beauty of the city, you must first make your way through the winding roads until you can truly understand how the people and the city coexist.

3

Take a day trip to Sigiriya

For those who may not be aware, there is a range of cultural locations in close proximity to Kandy City. One such landmark is Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, which is also considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to experience this is to leave early in the morning to be at the summit during sunrise.

4

Visit the Temple of the Tooth

This is considered one of the most sacred locations on the island and it is said to hold a tooth relic of the Buddha. It is also housed within the palace of the last king of Sri Lanka.

5

Walk around Kandy Lake

The Kandy Lake is ever visible no matter where you view the city from and is a peaceful and beautiful part of the overall region. Take a stroll around the lake and take in the beauty that it exudes and that history it is a part of.
