Time to catch some waves

This town is home to a thriving community of surfers who visit seasonally or call Tangalle home all year round. What makes Tangalle an ideal location for surfers is the beach break that aids in creating waves that are suitable for beginners as well. The location of the town also ensures that the surfs are never affected by onshore winds.

The Mulkirigala Rock Monastery

As with anywhere else on the island, it is impossible to visit Sri Lanka and be a stone's throw away from a historical landmark. The Mulkirigala Rock Temple is a great example of such a landmark and is found just North-West of Tangalle. The temple is located atop a rock and contains seven temples in 5 separate terraces.
This is a huge attraction for locals and tourists alike who make the climb up to take in history or engage in religious activities.

The Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary

Another piece of the island that enthrals all who enter its domain is the abundance of wildlife, fauna and flora. This bird sanctuary was established in 1938 and has grown to become a site of immense biodiversity. It is particularly well known for the vast variety of birds that can be seen here.
The sanctuary is a mixture of various habitats and visitors can experience open grassland, mangroves and even coastal lagoons making for a breath-taking adventure for all those who enter.
As of today, the sanctuary is home to 4 species of birds who are at risk along with 38 species of reptiles.

Swimming in Tangalle

One of the things to vary of is the rough seas that are around Tangalle. There are several places where the waters are not suitable for swimming due to dangerous currents.
The best advice would be to always speak to your accommodation and the locals to ensure that where you are planning to go for a swim is safe and better yet, never go alone.
