What makes a car dangerous? Is it a design flaw in the engine or the stupidity of it's drivers? The answer is both, depending on the model, because there are blunders on both the automaker's and the driver's part. Fortunately, automakers are learning from their mistakes and producing safer cars. The Ford Escape, for example, has one of the highest safety ratings in it's class, which is saying a lot because SUV's are generally safe cars nowadays.
Some people absolutely loved this car, but it was one of the most dangerous models of it's time. In order to cut costs, Chevrolet took away the front stabilizer bar, causing some handling issues. The engine was in the back, sometimes spitting toxic fumes into the front cabin. Cars don't do that now, but back then it was all too common to find such cars on Utah's highways.
The Smart car is the epitome of compact convenience, but is also a danger during an accident. Since there is nothing on Utah's roads smaller than it save a motorcycle, it will always crumble in a major accident. That, and some tests resulted in the car getting airborne at 40 miles per hour. A Ford Escape would have no such problems in Utah or anywhere else.
A flashy, powerful sports car, the late 80's Corvette currently holds the record for most driver deaths to date. Fortunately, it has noting to do with faulty engine design, for the car performed so well that it became a deathtrap for speed junkies. The kind of people that bought the Corvette had the need for speed, and many died because of it.
Not even Ford was immune to car blunders. The Ford Pinto was a good car to drive until it was rear ended, for the gas tank was placed in a dangerous spot in the back that left it vulnerable to puncture, often exploding on impact. Since then, Ford has created the Escape and others that have gained high safety ratings. Every car company makes a mistake.
Unlike the Ford Escape, the Samurai was prone to rollovers, which made it a notorious mini-SUV to drive. It got some of the lowest ratings in Consumer Reports, angering executives at Suzuki.
