Canva Tutorial for Students

This instructional screencast video from Katherine Beverly offers a quick, helpful walkthrough of Canva. The video is designed with students in mind, so the instruction is clear, concise, and perfectly suited to their needs. As every learner's needs are different, this video could serve as a refresher for students who may already be familiar with Canva and don't need a lengthy presentation in order to get started with their designs.

Canva 101: 12 Do’s and Don’ts for Beginners

The beauty of Canva is its range of templates, themes, backgrounds, and predetermined color palettes. However, users are able to tweak any element of their design at any time. Students may be tempted to play around with their designs without bearing in mind that the design should serve the content; i.e., that it should be simple, attractive, and effective. This list of tips and tricks will keep students on track when designing in Canva.

Rhetorical Devices for Persuasion

This video from Tyler Rablin gives a quick rundown of rhetorical devices. Mrs. Romberg's students were tasked with creating an advertisement that utilized rhetorical tools of ethos, logos, and pathos: examples include hyperbole, anecdote, simile, and metaphor. For those who might need a refresher on the devices they can use in their advertisement, this video would be very helpful.

This handout/worksheet provided by Mrs. Romberg lists various rhetorical devices with definitions and examples. Students can pull from this as they create content for their advertisement. The digital tool (Canva) should ultimately serve the content.

Since this assignment asks students to create a product and advertise it, using examples of well-known advertisements of popular products will help students not only advertise their product but understand the rhetorical devices at play in advertisements.
