Sri Lanka has long been an epicentre of religious and spiritual value for people from across the world. Locally it is known for being a majority Buddhist nation, while other religions such as Catholic, Hindu and Islamic communities also call this stunning island home.

The ancient city of Anuradhapura

For a long time, the ancient kingdoms of the country moved from one region to another, however, one of the most renowned in today's context is the sacred city of Anuradhapura. This is a location that devotees locally and globally flock to pay their respects to the various landmarks such as the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanweliseya. For many people, the collection of landmarks forms a pilgrimage that they try to fulfil at least once in their lifetimes.

Adam's Peak

This is also amongst the most popular religious destinations on the island. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it is believed to have a commonplace in Buddhist, Hindu and Catholic religions and offers any devotee a great opportunity to conduct a pilgrimage to its summit.
The peak of this mountain is typically crowded with people who are waiting for the sunrise to shine upon them as it affords a view unlike any other of the surrounding landscapes as well.
Many people will spend a day at a Kandy hotel in Sri Lanka such as the Earl's Regency Kandy before making the journey to this destination.

The Koneswaram Kovil

This religious site is considered to be one of the most significant temples on the island for the Hindu community. To visit this temple, it is necessary to go to the eastern region of the island, towards Trincomalee. The temple is also believed to have ancient roots, having been constructed in 1580 BC making it a vital part of the history of the island.

Captains Gardens Kovil

This is a Hindu kovil which is referred to as the Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devashthanam and is considered to be the oldest Hindu temple in the economic hub of Colombo, Sri Lanka. This beautiful kovil is adorned with paintings making it a work of art. The main deities worshipped at this temple is Shiva and Ganesh.

Kataragama

This town of Kataragama is considered to be amongst the most visited religious destinations on the island. With particular significance to the Buddhists, Hindus as well as the Vedda people the region is considered to be sacred by many. It is also the home to the Kataragama deity as well as the Buddha statue in Kiri Vehera.

The Kalutara Temple

This is one of the many temples in Sri Lanka that is considered to be of particular significance. One of the reasons that are so well regarded is that it is home to one of the 32 saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. For anyone religious, this is an ideal place to practice spirituality and worship.

Kelaniya Temple

This is an ancient temple that is believed to have been a site of worship since 500 BCE and it is also believed that the Buddha himself has visited this temple.
