If you find yourself caught with a flat car battery and you don’t have your own jump starter power pack, then the remaining possibility is to jumpstart your car using another car.
If you find yourself caught out with a dead car battery, the most common solution is to jump start your car using another car.
Ensure the vehicles’ are parked suitable distance from each other so that the Jumper leads can reach the car batteries in each car (but without the cars touching)
Ensure both car engines are switched off
Before you begin it’s important to not let the clamps of the jumper cables touch each other (otherwise sparks may fly)
Attach the positive clamp to the positive terminal of the dead car battery
Attach the positive clamp to the positive terminal of the working car battery
Attach the negative clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery
Attach the other negative clamp to any unpainted part of your car (a clean nut or bolt would be perfect
Start the car with the working car battery. Let it run for a couple of minutes Now try starting the car with the dead car battery, if successful your car should turn over easily
Remove jumper leads (clamps) in reverse order once done.
Make sure your hand break is on and the vehicle is in park
Locate your positive battery terminal, this should be marked with a ‘+’ sign, and your negative terminal, this should be marked with a ‘-‘ sign.
Once you have identified the positive and negative terminal
Loosen the screws on the terminal clamps so that you can disconnect them from them from the battery.
Remove the negative (-) terminal clamp first. Next remove the positive terminal (+) clamp from the car battery.
Once you have removed the clamps from the terminals you can unfasten the car battery hold down strap, by loosening the bolt. If the battery is held down at the bottom of the battery, undo it with a socket and rachet as theres not usually enough room to use a normal spanner.
Lift the car battery out of its tray making sure you keep the battery upright.
Using a wire brush and baking soda and water mixture give the terminals a bit of a clean. Then sweep out the battery tray. Ensure everything is dry.
Place your new car battery on the car battery tray. Ensure you have it the same way around as the last battery so the positive and negative clamps go on the correct terminals on the battery. Put the car battery hold down strap back in place and tighten the bolt
Attach the clamp to the positive terminal, then the negative terminal.
Tighten the clamps.
Double check all clamps and battery straps are tightened and you’re done! You can start your car now to make sure everything is working as it should.
