Taking a journey to the small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is not something everyone gets to do. It is a travel destination that has a huge demand, however, there is a subset of travellers who will visit at any cost to enjoy simply one thing, the waves.

Rip across the Koggala Beach

While this list is in no particular order, the Koggala beach is certainly one of the best places for surfing on the island. It is well regarded as an ideal destination for both beginners and intermediary surfers. Many people who have not heard of this beach may recognize the region due to the popular imagery of stilt fishers who spend their days on this beach.
The conditions of the ocean in this part of the island are best during the winter months of the year but it should be noted that continuous breaks should not be expected. For beginners, they should keep in mind that waves can get up to 1.5m tall.

Head over to Ahangama

This town on the coast of Sri Lanka is considered to be the surfing capital of the Southern Province as it brings together a huge pool of talented surfers from across the island as well as the world. The best part of this particular town is that offers easy access to areas such as Midigama and Mirissa making it an ideal hub for anyone trying to catch a variety of waves during any given season.
Surfing enthusiasts are advised that the months from December to March offer up some of the best waves, but you can still expect some decent waves even if you visit during the wet season from May to September.

Dive into Dewata

The town of Dewata may not ring a familiar tune for many people, however, this location just south of Galle has gained a lot of attention from the surfing community over the past decade. This beach offers up a steady stream of consistent waves that makes it an optimum training ground for anyone who is hoping to improve their foundations. There are also places where beginners can rent a board and get surf lessons to get them started on their surfing journey.

Enjoy the beauty of Balapitiya

This stunning destination is certainly beautiful and offers a good range of waves. The exposed reef break ensures that there are some reliable surfs to be enjoyed however, many people simply opt to visit and relax by the beach. Many people would also choose to spend some time at one of the Pasikuda beach hotels, where a good option is the Amethyst Resort Passikudah before making their way to the coast to surf.

Hikkaduwa is another hotspot for surfing and is home to a great community of surfers who like to spend their morning surfing and the night party it up. This is a great place for surfers of all levels of expertise as well as those who enjoy being in a close-knit community.
