Attractions and Excursions in and around Pasikuda – Discover the hidden treasures around this picturesque beach!

Rising from the aftermath of the tsunami devastation which hit the shores of Sri Lanka in 2004, Pasikuda beach is a favourite amongst locals and visitors due to long stretches of shallow reef coastline and pristine white sands. Find some of the best spots to visit in Pasikuda.

1

Explore the city of Batticaloa

A quaint laidback town, Batticaloa city is the closest to Pasikuda. The Dutch who colonized Sri Lanka landed in Batticaloa; a city covered on 03 sides by water in 1602. The city still retains nostalgic remnants of that colonial past such as ancient buildings, churches, a fort and a lighthouse. Experience the panoramic view from the top of the lighthouse which is strategically erected where the Batticaloa Lagoon meets the Indian Ocean as often done by visitors from Pasikuda beach hotels. Take time to visit Bridge Street Market to pick up fresh pots of curd, heavenly treacle and much more fresh produce from small scale producers.

2

The tranquil Kalkudah Beach

A short 20-minute ride from Pasikuda lies a 4-kilometre-long stretch of beach so peaceful that visitors love the atmosphere. Though much like Pakikuda Beach, Kalkudah is enticingly serene with soft sand and crystal-clear water. If you are planning to spend time at this lovely beach get your picnic basket packed from hotels such as The Calm Resort & Spa to enjoy Kalkuda without having to worry about your hunger pangs, restaurants and food stalls being somewhat limited.

3

Batticaloa Lagoon

A vast water body with an abundance of flora and fauna, this lagoon is a main natural attraction in Batticaloa. Take a tour around the lagoon to learn about the fishing activities, observe the flora and fauna and watch as the fishermen come back with their catch of shrimp and crab that this lagoon is famous for. As you go down the lagoon watch out for many changes in the landscape that would amaze you.

4

Do a cycling tour

With a wealth of natural treasures, Pasikuda can be a cyclists' delight. Try out this eco-friendly mode of uncovering hidden treasures. The beautiful scenery and the cool breeze will compensate for the long rides you do, many shops sell mouthwatering local treats and even souvenirs. You would be amazed at how economical it is to see places on a cycle. If you are joining a cycling tour have the itinerary discussed with your guide to ensure you cover the important attractions and stops for meals and pitstops are worked out to replenish energy levels.

Batticaloa Dutch Fort

Originally built by the Portuguese in 1628 and used as an Administration Centre, it was captured by the Dutch a decade later, finally the British captured the Fort in 1745. With such a rich history behind this strong building which still commands a formidable presence, is presently used by a few Government Offices. Despite the age of the structure and having had taken a beating due to the Tsunami in 2004, the Fort proudly stands tall and strong with its ramparts and cannons promising magnificent views of the coast to the visitors.
