Sri Lanka is home to some of the most beautiful lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and green paddy fields. Witness all of this and more while on a train ride from Kandy to Ella.
The hill capital of Kandy is where the train ride begins. Start exploring Kandy before you embark on the train journey as this city is a beautiful little mine of adventures and places to visit. Apart from the obvious attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth relic and the botanical gardens Kandy is also famous for the Pinnawala Elephant orphanage, the Esela Perehera, the National Tea Museum, and the Kandy National Museum which are equally exciting and interesting. Once you have had time to explore Kandy plan to head to Hatton on the train that head to Ella. The entire trip from Kandy to Ella is only seven hours but stopping along the way to explore the beautiful cities is the best way to enjoy this train ride.
Hatton is the first major stop for the Udarata Manike train. Here, you can visit Sri Pada which is also known as Adam's peak and is a popular location of significance for Buddhists, Christians, and Hindus which makes this a hotspot not only for foreigners but also for the locals. When you conquer the tedious hike you will be able to witness a stunning sunrise which is considered to bring good luck. When you are at the top you understand how beautiful this country is and how blessed it is with so much nature. Apart from Siripada, you can also explore tea plantations and other plantations in Hatton and the cold weather is bound to make you long for a warm cup of tea from beautiful Sri Lanka. Hotels are scattered in and around the city and you can pick a location that is either right in the town or away from the town depending on your requirements and your budget.
Once you have made the best of your stay in Hatton you can embark on the Udaratamanike train from Kandy to Ella once again to explore Nuwara Eliya. This beautiful city is known as Little England due to the weather, the atmosphere, and everything you can experience including strawberry farms and tea plantations. You can explore the riverside and enjoy boat rides while also taking walks along tea plantations or the Nuwaraeliya road itself as this is a picturesque location that is bound to create memories that last a lifetime. The train from Kandy to Ella goes through over 45 tunnels and one of the best experiences of Nuwaraeliya is walking through these tunnels but you need to keep in mind to steer clear of trains when you are heading towards a tunnel.
Apart from the tunnels, another common scenery you will witness on the train to Ella is the stunning waterfalls that run with you as you take the train journey. When you finally arrive in Ella you will be able to go waterfall hopping as there are so many different waterfalls in this scenic city. Once you have explored the city to your heart's content, get a ticket on the same train back to Kandy and enjoy the entire train ride all in one.
