A List of Water Activities to Do in Nelson Bay, NSW - Fun on and off the land

Located in South Wales' Hunter region, Nelson Bay is a quaint holiday getaway for all travellers. To know what kind of adventures you can have here, read on.

1

The Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park

The coastal beauty of Port Stephens is legendary across this region of Australia. The Great Lakes park has the best sights that Port Stephens has to offer, in addition to a vast array of wildlife. Dolphins, turtles and sea fish can be found in abundance. During certain times, humpback whales can also be seen along the Port Stephens coastline during their annual migratory trip north. Visitors to the park can indulge in whale-watching, kayaking, snorkelling and a range of other water sports. Stay at Nelson Bay hotels located near the park, like Oaks Nelson Bay Lure Suites.

2

Take a look at the Avocado Farm

If you feel like exploring another side to Nelson Bay, go to the Bobs Farm and check out their famous Avocado Farm stall. The stall is open from June to mid-December and if you happen to be visiting then, you'll find plenty of fresh Macadamia nuts, honey and avocadoes. As an added bonus, there will also be a range of locally manufactured handicrafts and antique furniture to garner your interest.

3

Put Put at the Palms Golf Course

Also located at Bobs Farm is this demanding golf course. The calm and pleasant setting will ensure you enjoy a slice of serenity along with your golfing retreat. This course is recommended for people familiar with the sport since the challenging layout of the Palms Golf Course contains an arrangement of par threes and par fours with true green fairways that are thoroughly grassed. The park features a fully licensed bar as well as barbeque facilities to enable you to relax after a long day of golf.

4

Port Stephens Community Arts Centre

The residents of Nelson Bay are talented and passionate about the arts, so if you'd like to see some fine works of visual art and sculpture, visit the community arts centre. There's quite an extensive range of work to be glimpsed, with multiple galleries showcasing work from different eras. All of the work featured at the centre is for sale at very reasonable prices and are bound to make ideal mementoes or souvenirs. If you visit the centre on a weekend, there's a café serving delectable lunches and drinks.

Gear up for shark and ray encounters

There's no place like this on the entire continent of Australia so if you find yourself in Nelson Bay, this is a must-visit. This establishment allows you to interact with sharks and cuddle with stingrays. Raspy, one of the park's resident stingrays, who weighs around 325 kilograms, will eagerly glide up to you and gently place himself on your lap with the guidance of an expert handler. The park houses a total of 190 sharks and rays, all of which can be interacted with. The incredible aquarium is only a 2 and a half-hour drive from Sydney and is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, except on the day of Christmas.
