Traditional Hong Kong food you must try- Delight your taste buds with these treats!

Among the best locations in Asia for food lovers. Hong Kong has over 15,000 restaurants, the highest number according to density in the world! The cuisine is primarily Cantonese styled cooking but provides a glimpse into the colonial history with all kinds of East-meets-West food pairings.

1

Pineapple buns

These are the quintessential Hong Kong classic and can be found in bakeries and cha chaan tengs all over Hong Kong. The bun is soft and fluffy, covered in a crumbly, sweet sugary crusty top. Despite the name, unfortunately, you won't find any of its namesake fruit in the bun. The name derives from its appearance, which is supposed to resemble the fruit. Eat it fresh out of the oven with some cold butter for a tasty treat!

2

Zhu Cheung fun

Sometimes called Cheung fun, the dish consists of steamed rice rolls. It is a popular street-side snack and is also found in dim sum parlours. The rice rolls are velvety smooth and have the fantastic smell of freshly cooked rice. It is best eaten with generous amounts of seasoned soy sauce, sesame sauce, and a dab of chilli sauce. Mind you, it can get spicy with all the condiments, so choose as per preference. To intensify the flavour, get it garnished with sesame seeds, dried shrimps and spring onions.

3

Tofu Dessert

Also called tofu fa or tofu pudding, this yummy dessert made out of fresh tofu is the panna cotta of the East. It is so smooth and delicious one would hardly believe it's made from beans. The pudding is made from soybeans and is ideally served with a light sugary syrup made from red sugar crystals. It is sold frequently by tofu dessert sellers. You can enjoy the pudding either cold or warm, either way, it's a delicious dessert packed with nutrients too!

Hong Kong styled egg tarts

There are two types of egg tarts found in Hong Kong, one is the shortcrust egg tart, and the other is made out of puff pastry. Both are just as good, but the classic is the shortcrust pastry. The buttery pastry is filled with silky and light egg custard. Pair it with a Hong Kong styled milk tea for the perfect afternoon treat.

5

Wonton noodles

Wonton noodles are chewy egg noodles boiled al dente, topped off with shrimp and pork dumplings. Shrimp and vegetarian dumpling soup are also the other options available. The noodles are soaked in a flavourful umami broth and garnished with yellow chives.

6

Egg puffs

Also called gai daan jai or egg waffles, they are indeed one of the favourite street snacks in Hong Kong. Crispy and soft at the same time, it is held by a golden lattice of waffle batter. It is perfect for sharing, as each "bubble" or puff can be torn apart. Some vendors get creative and sell them in all kinds of flavours such as, filled with matcha, chocolate chips, and with scoops of ice cream. Try the authentic concoction first before experimenting with all the other flavours available. If looking for accommodation in Wan Chai, hotel such as the Dorsett Wan Chai in Hong Kong is always a good option to consider.
