Best places to visit in Salalah – A quaint city in Oman

Salalah is a town in Oman that people usually visit quite heavily during the Khareef time. While this is a beautiful coastal town, there is usually not much action even during the season. If you are visiting Salalah for Khareef and want to do some exciting activities, here are a few suggestions for you.

1

Sadah Castle

The Sadah Castle once served as a guardhouse during the time of Sayyid Taimur bin Faisal. It was an important location and trade centre for the exchange of frankincense. While the actual building itself looks pretty insignificant, once you step inside, you will be pleasantly surprised by the beauty it holds. There are beautiful colours, textiles that have been embroidered, and antiques that have been placed in different parts of the castle. It is a great place to go as a family and learn about the history of Salalah. It is open from 8.30 am to 2.30 from Sunday to Thursday and can be easily accessed from your Salalah beach resort.

2

Khor Rori

The name Khor Rori translates to "sweet water outlet". This is another place you can visit while at the Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara. This is the site that holds the ruins of the Sumuharam town. This was also a part of the defence system of the ancient kingdom during the time of frankincense trade and was also an important link with India. Several valuables were found in the site when it was rediscovered in the 19th century such as bronze vessels and limestone basins. The site can be visited between 9.00 am and 8.00 pm.

3

Mirbat Castle

This castle is situated in the city of Mirbat. It once served as the capital of the region and is famous for the breeding and exportation of horses. It is also famous for being the home for the battle of 1972 between the British and the Yemeni supporters. It was only about two decades ago when the castle was restored and made public as a tourist destination. The castle is situated at the top of a mountain that overlooks the Mirbat harbour which provides a quaint view of the region's charming fisheries industry. If you are interested in exploring archaeological ruins in a beautiful location this is a place you should visit. The Mirbat castle is open to the public between 8.30 am to 2.30 pm from Sunday to Thursday.

Taqah Castle

This was first built as a private residency to a royal in the 19th century. After its original owner, Sultan said bin Taimur used it as his private residence. It is also believed that the castle holds the tombs of some of the royalty who resided in it. Today the castle serves as a museum that is owned with artefacts from ancient Oman. It is used to depict the way ancient Omanis lived and worked. There are weapons, illustrations, and cookware on its premises. The Taqah castle can be accessed by the public from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm from Sundays to Thursdays.
