Top Family-Friendly Things to Do in Galle with Kids – A Galle adventure for the kids

Galle is a beloved holiday location for locals and tourists alike. It is situated by the Indian Ocean and is home to some great beaches, cultural attractions, food, and more. If you are planning to visit Galle with your family, here are a few top things to do.

1

Go to the beach

There is an endless number of beaches in Galle that you can visit. Each hotel situated on the coast has its private beach while there are also several public beaches within the Galle town. You can spend your day swimming, playing water sports and enjoying the sun. Some of the most famous beaches in the area are Unawatuna and Jungle Beach. There are also multiple surf schools along the coast that you can learn from.

2

Visit the Galle Fort

This is almost a part of every Sri Lankan's life. A trip to the Galle Fort is mandatory at least once in a couple of years. This old fort made by the Dutch stands true to its glory even today. The fort overlooks the ocean, which has spots for diving, swimming, and snorkelling. The fort complex extends to an area crowded with shops, restaurants, hotels, and homes. You can spend a full day at the fort, enjoying the beach, eating some incredibly good food, doing some shopping, and visiting museums and cultural attractions. There is also a catholic church and a mosque on the premises.

3

Watch sea turtles

The area of Galle is also famous for having multiple centres that focus on sea turtle refuge and conservation. It will be a treat for your kids to go and see the process involved in rescuing and providing refuge to the sea turtles who are found hurt at sea. You can even spend the day volunteering at one of these centres to get a more immersive experience. Some areas also give you the chance to experience sea turtles laying eggs in the night. Any of the Galle resorts should be able to help you with finding a centre that provides this facility. However, note that this is not possible at all times of the year. Instead, it is an activity that is highly dependent on seasonality.

4

Visit the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum

Martin Wickramasinghe is a renowned Sri Lankan author famous for writing some of the most loved children's books in the country. You might be able to ask your holiday property – for instance, Fortress Resort and Spa – if there is a library close by where you can read his novels. The museum is a testament to his work and the folk culture in Sri Lanka. Kids will have a great time watching their favourite Sri Lankan novels come to life.

5

Cooking classes

Galle is also an area that is known for providing excellent food. There are various hotels and tour operators who can arrange a cooking experience with the locals. This will allow you to understand the different ingredients they use, the cooking techniques used by traditional households, and more. Most importantly, you will get the chance to taste some authentic southern Sir Lankan cooking.
