As in the mainland, the food scene in Koh Samui is just as vibrant. The incorporation of sweetness with sour, and then saltiness and spice is what makes Thai dishes delicious, along with the ample use of fresh aromatics such as lemongrass and lime leaves!

Tom yum goong

It is a soup that is considered the national dish of Thailand. The fragrant soup is made with herbs such as lemongrass, galangal, Thai basil, lime leaves, and shallots. Chillies and fish sauce brings a spiciness to the soup. The dish also includes mushrooms and jumbo shrimp and has an unusual blend of spicy and sour. It is eaten along with white rice.

Pad Thai

A Thai favourite all across the world! There are many ways to make the noodle dish, but the original recipes usually contain rice noodles, tofu, eggs, ground peanuts, tamarind sauce, onions, coriander, fish sauce and bean sprouts. The dish gets topped with condiments such as chillies and ground peanuts before eating.

Kuay tiew

Geng kheaw wan gai

The famous sweet, spicy and aromatic Thai green curry is made from coconut milk, bamboo shoots, and cherry-sized eggplants. The green curry paste used in the curry sauce is made of Thai basil, galangal and lemongrass. You can find variations of chicken, seafood, vegetables and tofu. The curry is best eaten with a bowl of freshly steamed basmati rice.

Tom Yam soup

The famous tom yum soup found in Koh Samui is prepared with seafood such as shrimp along with other ingredients such as lemongrass, lime, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, and chopped chilli peppers. The original Thai recipe of Tom Yam is spicy, if not used to spicy food, ask for a reduced spiced version instead.

A dessert is famous everywhere in Thailand. Fresh, ripe, sweet mangoes are eaten with sticky rice drenched in sweet coconut milk. So simple and so delicious!

Kalamae

It is a sweet, gluey confectionary prepared from rice flour, coconut cream, and palm sugar. This tasty Thai treat is a classic found in southern Thailand. It is also more popular in Koh Samui due to the many coconut tree estates found there.

Thai roti is a must when on the islands such as Koh Samui. Vendors will fill the sticky dough with sweet fillings such as Nutella, bananas, chocolate etc. The dough is doused in butter before frying it on the girdle. The soup has ingredients such as mushrooms, chicken, tomatoes, lemongrass, and galangal which are slowly boiled in coconut milk. This mild soup is loaded with flavour, excellent for those who want something slightly spicy but tasty.
