A large coastal town in southern Sri Lanka, with a mild temperature, enticing visitors to its magnificent beaches, however for those seeking something more than the beach there are a plethora of other irresistible things to do and to experience.

The amazing Lagoon

An oasis for bird and marine life, Tangalle Lagoon is the ideal place for a relaxed day of canoeing or kayaking excursion along the calm azure waters for guests from Sri Lanka luxury resorts. You will also be pleasantly surprised to watch the wildlife at the mangroves or on the lagoon as you paddle by. As there can also be a random crocodile lurking in the waters apart from the lovely birds, you will be advised to stay on the kayak or canoe to enjoy the excursion to the maximum.

Wonderous seawater spray at Hummanaya

Hummanaya blowhole is a beautiful natural creation of jet sprays of seawater into the air from amidst two giant rocks, the wonder is not only the volume and ferocity of the spray but is also the height, at 80 to 100 feet. At its best times which is during high tide, the wide-eyed audience receives a welcoming sea spay as enjoyed by guests at Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. Considered as the largest blowhole in Sri Lanka this is also the second-largest blowhole in the world, a must-visit site during your trip to Tangalle.

Udawalawe National Park

Surrounding the amazing Udawalawe reservoir this national park is one of the largest animal sanctuaries in Sri Lanka. The main attractions at this park are the water buffalo, jackal, spotted deer, mongoose, fox and an occasional leopard or jungle cat. The majestic elephants are of course seen in numbers at this park throughout the year. Adding colour and a cacophony of sounds at the park are the birds, there are many endemic birds found here such as Sri Lankan Grey Hornbill, Sri Lankan jungle fowl etc. Plan to visit during the early hours of the morning or at sunset to capture beautiful natural settings with wildlife.

Unique Mulkirigala Buddhist Temple

An ancient temple built atop a natural rock 205 metres high surrounded by another four rocks making it an unusual attraction in addition to being a place of devotion. The series of cave temples with beautiful murals, marvellous sculptures dating back many centuries make this temple an archaeological monument to be witnessed and preserved with care.

Bird Sanctuary at Kalametiya

To the east of Tangalle city lies Kalametiya, blessed with mangroves and coastal lagoons rich in biodiversity. This sanctuary is one of the first few bird sanctuaries on the island. The marsh at Kalametiya is ideal for the endemic birds as well as wintering birds such as grey herons, purple swamp hens and brahman kite making it a haven for them. Over 41 species of fish and over 150 species of birds make this a delightful place for nature lovers and especially for bird watchers. Even bird-watching tours are arranged on request.
