The temple of the Tooth

The sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is revered by Buddhists all over the world, the heavily secured chamber housing this important Buddhist Relic is open to devotees and tourists. The actual relic is not visible, as it is laid in a golden casket that is revered by the devotees. In addition to the relic, the temple complex enfolds multiple shrines, magnificent statues, beautiful murals and a well-appointed museum.

The Royal Palace

Church of St Paul

This beautiful Anglican Church consecrated in 1853 with neo-gothic architecture is a place of quiet dignity and tranquillity not too far from the Temple of the Tooth and is visited by guests from Hotel Topaz and many others. The Victorian interiors, delicate tapestry, panels carved in teakwood, a beautiful stained-glass window, and the solid pews make you go back in time. A wonderful place to find serenity.

Bhahiravakanda Vihara Buddha Statue

Located on a hill close to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, this gigantic statue of the Lord Buddha in a seated position being 88 feet in height, draws awe and is one of the tallest and beautifully carved Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. An ideal time to visit the site is either early morning or in the evening as during mid-day it can be hot and humid. Evenings are preferred by many as it is lit up giving an aura of grandeur. Don't miss the panoramic view from the hilltop which is awesome giving a sense of tranquillity away from the traffic and the noise below.

The British Garrison Cemetery

A poignant place to visit to have a glimpse into the past and reflect on life. Situated at the far end of the Kandy Lake, beyond the Temple of the Tooth and a short brisk walk up the hill, the simple plot of land is the solemn resting place of numerous men, women and children who died during the years 1822 to 1870. The inscriptions bear testimony to the fact that many of them have died young giving you a pang of emotion. Britain's heir to the throne, Prince Charles had visited this cemetery on his visit to Sri Lanka in the year 2013.
