Interestingly, Hong Kong happens to be a Chinese term meaning 'fragrant harbour'. On the other hand, Kowloon has a rather different meaning, signifying the phrase 'nine dragons'. According to tradition, a youthful Chinese emperor noticing the eight hills to be found in the area named it 'eight dragons'. Subsequently, a courtier reminded the monarch that he too happens to be a dragon (according to Chinese tradition). Accordingly, the area came to be known as 'nine dragons'. 'Kow' is like the Cantonese term 'gau' which means 'nine', whilst 'loon' is similar to 'lung' which means 'dragon'!
