Apart from being the political capital of China, Beijing is packed with attractions for the holiday goer. Found in the northwest of China close to the Yanshan Mountains, encounter a wide variety of places to visit; from the Great Wall of China to the Imperial Palace, temples and parks.

The Forbidden City

Also known as the Imperial Palace, its beginnings go back to the Yuan Dynasty of the 13th century. Its enormous size is due to the renovations made throughout the Ming Dynasty in 1406 and 1420, once the capital shifted from Nanking.
It is known as the Forbidden City because commoners weren't permitted into the complex. The palace extends over 720,000 square meters and is enclosed by a 10-meter-high façade with towers placed in the four directions and a moat 50 meters in depth.

The main attractions include the Meridian Gate, constructed in 1420; the Golden River Bridges, a system of five lavishly adorned white marble bridges; and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, which was the Emperor's banquet hall.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall is just an hour away from Beijing and unquestionably among the country's most important historical icons. Badaling Pass is the first section of the Wall made available to tourists. Walk along this majestic section dating back to the 16th century and is eight meters in height.
As you walk, you get to see the various towers and ramparts, allowing exquisite views of the surroundings.

Tian'anmen Square

Tiananmen Square is the largest inner-city intersection in the world and made to accommodate over a million people. It was created in 1958 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Republic.
Highlights to visit include the Monument to the People's Heroes known
as Rénmín Yingxióng Jìniànbei, which is a 38-meter high pillar made of 17,000 parts of marble and granite.

The Tiananmen Gate, also known as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, was built in 1417 and was previously the chief gateway to the Imperial City.
Other attractions include the Museum of the Chinese Revolution and
the Mausoleum of MaoZedong. It is where the remains of Mao are kept inside a crystal coffin.

Beihai Park

Located close to the Imperial Palace, the park happens to be the earliest surviving imperial garden in the city. Made during the 10th century, this lovely public garden is named after Lake Beihai located to the north.
Within the park, you can find relevant structures such as the Round Fort, of the Yuan era of 1271-1368, and the magnificent Hall of Enlightenment. Constructed in 1690, the hall houses a 1.5-meter-tall statue of the Buddha sculpted from a solitary chunk of white jade.

The Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven dates to 1420 and includes a collection of the most sacred buildings in Beijing. Surrounded by dense vegetation, these beautiful temples and shrines are placed in two segments. In rectangular; and other attractions include the Hall of the Vault of Heaven (Huangqiong Yu). Founded in 153, it possesses a blue-tiled cone-shaped shelter used to deposit the formal plaques of the Officials.
