Also known as the Imperial Palace, its beginnings go back to the Yuan Dynasty of the 13th century. Its enormous size is due to the renovations made throughout the Ming Dynasty in 1406 and 1420, once the capital shifted from Nanking.
It is known as the Forbidden City because commoners weren't permitted into the complex. The palace extends over 720,000 square meters and is enclosed by a 10-meter-high façade with towers placed in the four directions and a moat 50 meters in depth.
The main attractions include the Meridian Gate, constructed in 1420; the Golden River Bridges, a system of five lavishly adorned white marble bridges; and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, which was the Emperor's banquet hall.
