People stock their gun safe for all kinds of different reasons in Utah, but the reasons for the majority of people to own a gun has dramatically shifted in recent years. When comparing the results of a national survey of gun owners from 1999 to today, one might be surprised to see the giant swing in gun owners' priorities in Utah. Here's the top three reasons people say they own guns today.
When comparing the results Pew Research found back in February of 2013 to the findings of ABC News/Washington Post in 1999, this hasn't changed much over the last 14 years. In both polls, target and sport shooting was the third biggest reason for gun owners to stock their safe with firearms.
This is the big shocker. In 1999 hunting was the biggest reason gun owners had a safe full of firearms. Back then, 49% of gun owners said they had firearms for hunting. In Utah that's no surprise with some of the best game hunting in the country. But now, even in Utah, only 32% of gun owners say they own firearms for hunting.
Gun owners are saying they want to keep their families and themselves safe. Today, 48% of people who own guns have them for protection compared to only 26% back in 1999. The amount of people wanting to stay safe with guns has greatly increased.
