5 Maldives travel tips to know - Some things to keep in mind!

The Maldives is an island paradise with wide-reaching, spotless beaches, luxurious accommodation and an underwater world worth discovering! Here are some tips to know before starting your adventure.

1

The transfer

When planning a trip to a local island, one of the main points is to arrange a transfer to the chosen island from Male'. Many islands and resorts offer scheduled transfers via speedboat but one per day. Keep in mind there are no public ferries available, so remember private transfers will be expensive. If your stay is further away from Male, you may need a domestic flight, overnight ferries are also an option, however, costly. Furthermore, there won't be many direct transfer prospects between atolls. You may have to transit in Male, but most resorts or even guesthouses will arrange the transfer on your behalf, inquire with them about all possibilities.

2

There's a range of accommodation to choose from

In the Maldives, the hotels on occupied islands are classified as guesthouses to separate them from private resorts. Some of the guesthouses are equivalent to boutique hotels, with private pool villa Maldives, spas, and comfy large rooms. There are standard ones, with the basic amenities as well as the occasional hostels with dorms. One can pay from 20USD per person up to 100USD for a guesthouse.
There, of course, are the private island resorts that the Maldives is famous for, such as Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas.

3

Do some research

Every island in the Maldives is unique, despite the ubiquitous white sandy beaches and palm trees. However, there's a noticeable difference in the atmosphere. For example, you will encounter a livelier scene in Maafushi, a tourist hub, than in tranquil Fulidhoo. It's also an important factor for water sports. Certain islands like Thulusdhoo are top for surfing. If you want some land adventures, Hanimaadhoo has stretches of kilometres to be explored on a scooter. Tourism has developed to different degrees in the islands, so all may not be the right fit for you. So have an idea of what you are looking for, and decide on the island perfect for you.

4

The marine life

If water activities are among the main reasons for vacationing in the Maldives, again, research is important. As you will need to pick the correct atoll to make the most of your dive trip. Whale sharks, for instance, are located all year round in South Ari Atoll and occasionally be seen near the Baa Atoll. Sightings of whale sharks are rare in other atolls. Diving with nurse sharks and reef sharks is popular in Vaavu Atoll throughout the year, however more difficult to locate in others.

Local tourism is still new!

It is good to know this if spending time in the inhabited islands of the Maldives. The people are generally friendly and hospitable to foreign tourists. Some have experience working in luxury resorts and are used to western lifestyles. However, the older populations are gradually getting accustomed to seeing foreign travellers on the islands. Be friendly and courteous, and not too intrusive. A simple hello! And a smile will be appreciated by everyone!
