Things to Do During a Weekend Escape in Port Stephens and Nelson Bay – For a calming yet exciting experience

Tourists can find an array of things to do across Port Stephens and Nelson Bay. Water sports, beaches, sunsets, whale watching, national parks, and food are all part of the appeal.

1

Coastal views and beaches

The region is known for its beaches and amazing sights. Heading to the beach in the evening and catching the sunset is worth the travel time from Nelson Bay hotels. The Mount Tomaree, a 15-minute drive from Oaks Nelson Bay Lure Suites, is one of the top highlights here and offers beautiful panoramic views of the area. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top of the mountain, and the hike isn't all that challenging – be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes though. If you are not a fan of hiking, go to the Gan Gan Lookout and experience Nelson Bay from a 180 angle. The Nelson Headlight is another lookout, and the place is always empty. Fingal Bay, Worimi National Park, and Sunset Beach are a few other places you can visit during your weekend getaway.

2

Dolphin and whale watching

There's no better chance to see dolphins than a visit to the Dolphin capital of Australia. Dolphins populate the ocean around Nelson Bay and Porth Stephens. There's a chance of seeing them while snorkelling; that is, if you choose the right time to get underwater. For the best outcome, choose from the list of cruises offered. May to October is the whale migration period, so if you stop here at Nelson Bay during this time, you'll be able to see them off the shore.

3

Diving and snorkelling

Fly Point, Halifax Bay, and Pipeline are three of the best sites for snorkelling and diving. Sea hares and wobbegong sharks are frequent encounters in these parts. You can spend hours snorkelling, and if you are a certified diver, you'll be able to explore the deep waters. Keep in mind that diving and snorkelling can be dangerous at certain times of the year, so speak to your instructor or a local before planning your excursions.

4

Worimi National Park

Camel rides, sandboarding, and quading are some of the activities offered at Worimi National Park. You can book your favourite activity online, and don't worry if you haven't done any of these before; there's help at hand. If you are into intense physical activities, you can simply stroll along Anna Bay; the place is known for beautiful sights that look great in pictures.

5

Sample seafood

The restaurants around here serve up an array of seafood dishes. This is a coastal region, so the diverse menu doesn't come as a surprise. If you like oysters, visit Holbert's Oyster Farm, and visit NSW's Best Fish & Chip for fish and chips. Sample as many seafood dishes as you can; they are one of the key delights of Port Stephens and Nelson Bay.

6

Bob's Farm

Winery, brewery, and a restaurant make up Bob's Farm; there's also a shuttle bus service from Nelson Bay. Murray's Craft Brewing Co is another place you must visit if you are interested in brewing; the staff will generously offer you the chance to taste their beers as well. Whale Ale is another brewery that should be on your list. If time permits, make a stop at the Hunter Valley on your way to Nelson Bay and taste the rich craft beers and wines.

The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre

If you want memorabilia of your weekend escape, visit the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre. You can see the unique collection of artworks all throughout the week. Buying artwork here is the best way to support the local art trade.
