Two hours from Mackay is Moranbah, a town named after its aboriginal ancestors. Moranbah might not have a lot of attractions, but you'll find a lot to do if you don't mind wandering off a bit.
Founded in 1975, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park conserves the ecosystems of the reef. Within the parameters of the park lie 600 islands, about 3,000 coral reefs, mangrove islands, and 300 coral cays. The park protects and conserves the precious marine life found here; the surrounding waters are home to rays, sea snakes, turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks, and dugongs.
Plan your day trip to Pacific Heights and enjoy a variety of excursions and sights. Cooberrie Park, Capricorn Coast Pineapple Rail Trail, and sightseeing journeys are a few attractions of the region. It's best for tourists to get in touch with a local tour agent and ask them to offer you a tailor-made tour.
Located a few paces away from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Whitehaven Beach is the perfect picture of subtropical beauty. Stretching over seven kilometres, this dazzling coastal tract is among the must-visit places in Queensland. Luxury yacht cruises and sailboat trips are all possibilities here. You can also walk along one of the walking trails and experience the serene beauty of the region. Hill Inlet is a popular lookout that offers sweeping views over lush hilltops, turquoise waters, and white sands. If you don't have much time to walk around, book a scenic flight journey and experience the views from above.
An island of the Great Barrier Reef, Magnetic Island is a short ferry ride from Townsville. Beaches, hidden bays, and koalas are the key highlights of the island. Koalas are tucked away at Magnetic Island National Park, which occupies the bigger portion of the island. Nesting sea turtles are another attraction. Hiking, kayaking, reef diving, spa treatments, horseback riding, and walking tracks are included in the list of tourist diversions. Also, mahimahi, tuna, marlin, and sailfish are part of the thriving marine life here.
With coral reefs and secluded beaches, Lizard Island creates a tropical fantasy for travellers. The thriving wildlife here is protected by Lizard Island National Park; flying foxes, birds, and monitors are the residents here. Snorkelling is a popular pastime, and thanks to the abundant availability of campsites, camping has become a popular activity too.
Another gem found within close distance of Moranbah is Barron Gorge National Park. The misty mountain peaks, waterfalls, and lush rainforests are a few of the draws of the park. Barron Falls create a striking image during the wet season. You can either get here by car or enlist for a sightseeing tour.
Known for its palm-fringed beach and spa resorts, Palm Cove is the epitome of coastal charm. The beach is dotted with cafes and restaurants serving up an array of foods, but they don't interfere with the tranquillity of Palm Cove. Swimming is not a possibility as the surrounding waters are home to jellyfish and crocodiles, but the stretch of white sand is perfect for sunbathing.
Easily accessed from Oaks Moranbah Suites, the Grosvenor Complex houses the Coalface Art Gallery and a library. Those who are based at Moranbah service apartments can visit the Coalface Art Gallery to appreciate the talents of local artists.
